Yes, but there's a difference between being an icehole and being a genuinely terrible human being. Schmidt, by most accounts was kind of dickish towards fans away from the field, but that was something that few people actually got to see. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention, but back in 93 I don't think it was common knowledge that Schilling was a right wing bigot. He was just a fleshpop.
