That pretty much sums it up.  Baseball speaking Ruth is sitting on top of the mountain but let's not pretend that the guy was a saint or anything even close to it.  Ruth, Cobb and many other of the original "heroes" of baseball were asshats like many of today's greats.

Ruth was a womanizing alcoholic slob but I don't remember him being a racist. Sure you're not thinking of Cobb? And aside from being all those things, Ruth never took a performance enhancing substance and was also responsible for revolutionizing the HR in baseball.

Rowand just got tossed, he was dropping some F-bombs at the home plate ump.

read 'the life that ruth built' and some other historical writings on ruth...he wasnt as overt as cobb was in his bigotry but he most definitely did not like the brother man

Not saying this excuses his racist behavior but in those days being that way was much more accepted than it is today.

The big difference between the two aside from the steroids is the fans and media loved Ruth. He was king. If Bonds didn't have the personality of an icehole maybe more fans would embrace him.

I just want to know how a guy that's been deceased for nearly sixty years could have his own website?

Madson amazes me, he gives up 8 hits and 4 walks in 7 but no runs(check that, the runner he left on 2nd scored so that was credited to him). The Giants were knocking his pitches all over the place but couldn't produce a run. Phils played some solid D in front of him tonight, you can tell they play extra heads up when he's on the mound.

Cormier comes in for relief.

Bums win! That makes is 7 straight. Lady luck was in our corner tonight. Gordon with another 1-2-3 9th.

Just got back from the game. Good fun all around. Got to vent some anger on Bonds, not like he gave two shteins. Some douche in a Hawaiin shirt two sections over tried to get the wave started. He gave it a valiant effort, but it just never came to fruition. So, he kept trying. That prompted a very loud "wave guy sucks" chant. The look on his stupid face was priceless.

Bonds is an absolute albatross to his team. He can't hit anymore, he can't even move. He's a total liability everywhere on the field. I give the guy another month to pick up the hitting, and then I'd bench him. He does nothing outside of the occasional steroid enduced homer to help the team. Like Favre, he ought to just retire.

Anyone catch Ryan's Hawaiins tonight? I was sitting about two runs in front of them. $12 seats, baby.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

The Ryan's Hawaiians group is embarassing. Is it Howard or Madson? All out gayness on that one.

Madson was lucky as hell tonight. How many baserunners did he allow? Lucky.

But I'll take it! I still think Hamels needs to get the call.

Carlos Ruiz looked good tonight behind the plate.

Aaron Rowand getting thrown out was another instance of the umpires being total douchebags.

Barry looks bad. That play where he tried to jump over Finley's grounder and the play where he got lucky and caught Jimmy's ball in LF showed that his mobility is shot.

Time for Lieber to get off the schnide tomorrow night and get us #8 in a row.

Oh, and Tom Gordon is straight nasty. I keep saying this, but holy shtein that guy has some killer stuff.

Didn't get to see the game (WHY am I paying $$$ for Extra Innings when it doesn't show Harry the K?  :boom :boom :boom).  Good to see the Phils stay hot.

Utley is stinging the ball lately.  Rollins needs to get back to the small ball that made him so dangerous during his hitting streak.  Bell sucks.

Phreak:  I haven't seen the last couple of Madsen starts (basically since his implosion).  Is his problem mainly his stuff not being sharp or is it mainly location?  I really had high hopes for him coming into this season.

I don't see Hamels coming before June, if he even comes at all before Sept. 1.  The Phils don't operate that way, much to my chagrin.  If he does, it's a sign that Gillick does indeed have a lot of say.  I say keep Floyd- he's looked decent his last two starts.  If Madsen continues to struggle, send him to the pen (I have to wonder if there's something up with his arm).

Why does April hate the Phillies so much the last few years?  :boom
April 2006:  10-14

Whiz,

The problem with Madson has been location, location, location. He cannot, for whatever reason, locate his fastball. And since that is every pitchers bread and butter, it is getting him into trouble. His curveball isn't sharp and since his fastball is erratic his change-up isn't as effective as it could be.

He's got good velocity on the number one, but he cannot throw it for strikes consistently.

He's basically relying on his junk pitches to get him through games. Because even when he does get the fastball over it is getting hit because its down the middle.

I also think that being a starter and having to be more strategic in his approach is something that he is struggling with. As you know, as a starting pitcher you have to think ahead and set hitter up. And you have to be ready for their adjustments on the second, third and fourth times to the plate. Madson seems to be struggling there too.

He, in my opinion, is best suited for the "rock and fire" mentality of the bullpen. Get the ball, toe the rubber and make your pitch and get that one or two innings out of the way.

As for Hamels;

Charlie says he is campaigning for him. And the biggest problem we had in the past with our prospects was Ed Wade being too protective of them. Gillick wants to win. So I think that Pat will not be as reluctant to call up Cole once he meets whatever criteria Pat has set for him in his mind.
