I have a job interview next week with the VA. Instead of boring you with the details lets just say it's counseling veterans on rights and determining eligibility for certain programs. So I ask, what should I expect. Keep in mind I've never had a job interview.

Sgt PSN

You should probably expect to not get the job then.  Seriously....try and cram a couple interviews for jobs you don't care about in between now and then just so you get some interview experience under your belt.

Also, since it's a VA job, you should probably show up in a wheel chair or something.

SD

Thanks for the encouragement.

I've been reading up on probable questions from people who have interviewed with them before. I forgot that I interviewed for a similar position 2-3 years ago...although it was a part time gig for students...it was more of an assistants job. I got that one but had to decline because the hours didn't work with my schedule.

yeah...I couldn't accept it at the time because the hours were 6-10 PM and I had nobody to watch my daughter. That one was only part time because I was a full time student. Any advice?

i mean theres not much i can give if you are on the cusp of your interview...i could have helped with the rsume and application process....govt jobs are mostly resume driven...interviews count but because its by the book its hard to blow anyone away in a govt interview like you can in the public sector

I get 10 point veteran's preference so I have a big advantage. zanshin actually helped me out a bit...his resume is intimidating.

definitely...this is what im talking about when i say interviews dont matter that much in the govt....its who they should and who they are required to hire not who they would like to

So how did you get a gov't job?  Affirmative action?

ice grillin you

i got laid off when the tech boom went boom...not a good feeling...so i was like where can i go to get the best job security possible so that this never happens again....girl i was diggin out at the time was in the govt and she was like do this!...why not right?...nothing to lose....took over a 100% paycut to get in...mad over qualified for my position...but thats how you gotta do when you are coming cold turkey from the private sector...

not that theres a lot of competition for the title but it was the best move ive ever made in my life

Just out of curiosity, but did you have any connections other than your girl?  My squaw's been applying for jobs on base for the last 2 years and can't even get an interview.....just a generic email stating that they filled the position from within.  Gov't jobs tend to be a good ol' boy network and because she's not prior military or a military dependent, her resume goes to the very bottom of the pile and the job is always filled before they even get to her.  She's even applied for positions with the DOD Police on base and can't get her foot in the door for an interview, even though she was a cop for 8 years.  Yet every day when I drive through the gate to get on base, I see a few women checking id cards and you can tell that they had absolutely no prior experience and would probably shtein themselves if shtein hit the fan.  But their spouses are active duty military, so they get some preference for that.  Pisses me off sometimes.

You'd better marry her, then.

The man. The myth. The legend.

i had no connections period...theres no such thing as connections in the govt....she helped with curbin my resume the way it needed to go...but as far as hiring people its goes by the book.....the only reason i got a job is like i said i was ridiculously over qualified for the position...in fact during the interview i was asked why are you taking this...and i told them straight up because im unemployed and just want my foot in the door...10 years later im makin over 100k...ive said it a million times on this board and me and sd have talked at tailgate...there is no better job than a govt job...unless of course you have a masters in some shtein like accounting or engineering or some specialized field

Guess not all gov't jobs have a network, but on military bases they definitely do.

I may be facing a medical retirement by the end of this year.  If that's the case, I'll def be hitting you guys up for some resume tips because I'm getting ready to hit 17 yrs service and if I'm not able to stick it out until 20, then I'm def going to look at gov't jobs first.
