All the "all-inclusive" places offer added benefit of safety if you stay on property, especially in Jamaica. But don't waltz around like an idiot, and you'll probably be safe. It's no worse than plenty of sections of major US cities you've visited. Plus, you might be able to acquire a garbage bag of MJ for that $5 (which is why you could also get mugged for $5).

Jamaica is a nightmare off the resorts.  Negril is your best bet if you want to go walk the town, and even the markets are shady as ish with an escort.  Jamaica as a whole isnt safe, you'll realize that as you turn on the news there.  Kingston may be one of the scariest places to go.  I know 3 brotherswho grew up in the US, but were born in Kingston.  They went back home a few years back, and never were more scared for their lives.  These guys weren't exactly small, nor the type to back down.

I'd recommend a sandals resort on the Leeward islands.  I've been to St Lucia and Antigua, and you can't go wrong.

Just tell the locals you're Jewmaican and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Ive been to Sandals in St Lucia - great place..both the resort and island. I really dont care which resort we go to (or island for that matter - theyre all the same to me), so long as its worth the money.

All the Marley stuff is in or near Kingston - is it possible to hire a driver for the day? We did that in Lucia and never knew if we were traveling through sketchy areas or not. Then again, I never heard the warnings about Lucia as I am about Jamaica..

Jamaica is a farging shteinhole.

I stayed at Sandals in Ocho Rios and it was awful.  Spend a few dollars more and go to Bermuda.  You won't be sorry.

I actually looked into going to Jamaica yesterday but after doing some research it looks like a last option. I'd probably go with Aruba, Bermuda, or Antigua first. If you have the coin and want an awesome place that's not too touristy and is pretty safe go to Seychelles which is a little island off the coast of Africa. One of the greatest places I have ever been to.

Rome

If you insist on going to the Caribbean go to the Virgin Islands.

It's farging beautiful, safe & clean and best of all there's no travel restrictions.

i can double down on this

the beaches there are outrageous. just be careful driving or when youre in a cab, its like everyone is a chinese woman.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

I've done Sandals in Negril and Secrets in Montego Bay. Both were pretty darned nice. Of course, I never strayed off of the resorts.

Wifey wants to go away for a week - She's looking at a Secrets resort named St. James in Montego Bay..

- Anyone have any insight into that area/resort? Good? Bad?
- More importantly, how true is the "don't leave the resort" warnings I've heard? I want to check out the Marley Musuem, his gravesite, etc..multiple people have told you could get mugged/killed for $5, but I dont quite buy it

How can you be so farging obtuse?  Your wife looks just like them!  When you get there, send her out to score some grass, then spend the rest of your time safely within the Disney-esque compound, delightfully detached from the obscene reality of the people on the other side.

Fun.

Yeah...that's one thing I don't get.

People want to travel and stay at a resort...where people wait on them, hand and foot, stay on a private beach, and never leave the hotel/resort. I get that. But why travel thousands of miles?

Why not just go to Florida or Southern California and stay at a beach front hotel? I never understood people that said they have been to Jamaica or other places...stayed at a resort but never ventured into the mainland and hung with the locals...yet they somehow they 'experienced' the area. That's a joke.

My girl wants to do the same...but I tell her, we'll just stay in Huntington Beach or in San Diego and save money if she wants to do that.

My recommendation:

Go to Puerto Rico.

Rent a house and stay in the island of Vieques. You'll have to take a ferry or a small plane to get there. Beaches are awesome, warm water, sunset is beautiful, full of locals, little to no tourists, kayak bio bay, drink cheap bear, and you get carribean water. You truly get away there. Split time between there and the main land. There's lots to do, its pretty safe, and people speak english.

If I wanted to drink beer lay on the beach and deal with Puerto Ricans I could just go to the Jersey Shore

I've never been to Jamaica but I've found that most American folks think that any country other than ours is sketchy and unsafe.

I've read a lot of forums on TripAdvisor and it cracks me up how many people talk about if it's safe or if they're likely to be robbed and murdered. Shoot - people ask that about Vegas and venturing off the strip like its some wild jungle beyond.

You are more likely to be beaten and robbed in parts of Philly or have your face gnawed on in Miami.

I could imagine a strange alternate universe in which I move my family to Puerto Rico.  It's been discussed anyway.

I'd move there in a heart beat if they didn't speak Mexican.
