you are mr. anti advanced stats. the slightest discussion of non-back of the baseball card stats, or simply dismissing some of them, breaks the very foundation of your core.

but you like walks?
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Sgt PSN

I'm pretty sure walks has been a notable stat for over a hundred years....and has been found on the backs of baseball cards since 1981.

It's exactly like a VORP.  Except it's easy to understand and relevant.

A batters job, at a bare minimum, is to get on base. Hit, walk, hbp....I really don't care how it happens.

ice grillin you

a walk isnt as good as a hit but who would ever say its a bad thing.....its better than a strikeout!!

lil billy beane guy trying to co-opt the stat as a sabremetrics invention is just ridiculous

The value of a walk depends on the situation, IMO. Lead off walk is just as good as a lead off single. Drawing a walk with a runner on 3rd and < 2 outs is damn near useless.

ice grillin you

a bases empty walk is def better than a single because more often than not it means you probbaly received more pitches

Sgt PSN

That goes without saying. I'm a bigger fan of a 4+ pitch walk than I am a 1st or 2nd pitch single.

Sgt PSN

Haha.  It's better big picture wise because you're making the pitcher throw more pitches.  In the moment, a 1st pitch single or an 8 pitch walk carry the same weight.  Runner on 1st, no outs.
