lol at Madson signing for less than 25 million.

ice grillin you

the only chance of that happening is for the cardinals to enter the fray and go head to head against the reds...which i suppose is possible...but i cant imagine two seperate teams bidding against each other for a player that has no real market
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

im the board pharmacist....always one step above yous

Amaro will have the last laugh when Papelbon saves 70 games and also 70 kittens from trees.

Rome

Madson was not going to sign with the Phillies for 25 million dollars.

He made a mistake thinking anyone would sign him for more but there's no way he would have signed for that if they laid that deal on the table in front of him.

PoopyfaceMcGee

He might have gone for a $25m one-year deal. Which would have been better than Papelbon's contract.

i love how people still care about overpaying for papelbon

this isnt the oakland a's budget you dorks. they print money and if they spent $5 mil a year too much on a closer it makes no difference in the world to anyone except fans who care too much about what people make.

was it a ridiculous contract? yes. what is short sighted? of course. does it matter? NO.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

People need to stop thinking about the Phillies as a small market team. They're top 3 right now behind the Yanks and Red Sox. Yo Yo Yo Top of the Food Chain.

To this point, they're still claiming that their goal is to stay under the luxury tax threshold.  If so, they're pretty hard up against it.

Yes, I realize they can afford easily to go over it - I just haven't seen evidence yet that they're willing to do so.

Rome

I was talking to a buddy last nite and I asked him how he felt about the Phillies offseason.

He said, papelboner!

I punched him but I still laughed mostly because I knew I was going to post it here today.  I love you all that much!

There has also been no evidence that they aren't willing to do so. They also haven't not gone after any player they've targeted because of financial concerns. They got papelbon, and resigned rollins. Does anyone expect Hamels to not get his contract?

No one brings up the notion that maybe they just did not want to bring Madson back for baseball reasons? I mean every other team that needed a closer passed on Madson.

Geowhizzer

You mean like this?

Excerpts:
QuoteAs the Phillies' payroll has risen in recent seasons, the team has become more aware of the competitive-balance (or luxury) tax threshold.

Team officials were very cognizant of the $178 million threshold as they made deals during the 2011 season.

QuoteTeams exceeding the tax threshold for the first time pay 22.5 percent for every dollar spent over the threshold. The Phillies view that as "empty payroll."

The threshold will remain at $178 million for 2012.

"We're working to try to be successful at staying under again," Amaro said.

May not mean they're not willing to go over - but it probably won't be over by much.

What is said in the press is one thing, the acquisitions say otherwise.  they wanted Halladay, got him, Lee... got him. Oswalt... Pence... a slight overpayment for Papelbon this offseason is not going to keep them from someone else they feel is the right fit.

None of those acquisitions put them over the luxury tax threshold.  We'll see if/when they actually take that step.

Maybe I just have bad flashbacks from the 1990s Phils that tried to pawn of Gregg Jefferies as a premier free agent signing.
