He asked for a raise/extension, not a trade. The question under consideration isn't Reddick vs Smith but whether a 30+ year old edge rusher is the best use of tens of millions of dollars per year. Fangio might prefer an NFL quality starting safety, or some linebackers who can tackle.

Since Reddick has a year left and an elite edge is a super-premium player, the Eagles shouldn't feel like they have to do anything now. If they do trade him I think Howie is conceding a year or two of rebuild after going all in.

Agreed, unless they expect a lengthy holdout or a generous offer by another team. Either of those could happen.

I mean, that's enough production for me to have no problem with adding him in the first half of February.  Might be a decent inexpensive piece.  What's the downside?

Plenty of upside to a signing like this, almost no downside.  Worst case, he's a camp body and they is necessary.
