Quote1. Brian Johnson has become an easy target the last few weeks because the offense has been terrible, and while there's no question he shares a chunk of the blame, it's not all on him, and sometimes what appears to be a bad play call in reality is a bad decision or poor execution. Keep this in mind when we're talking about Jalen Hurts' ill-fated deep throws, which have become a real problem lately: Most play calls include a deep shot, a medium-range throw and a safe underneath throw, and the quarterback is going to look deep first, then mid-range and if there's still nothing there he'll dump it off. Not every call has those options built in, but in this offense most do. So where the ball goes is often up to the quarterback within the options of the play call. So it's not like Hurts has to throw deep when he throws deep. And when Hurts gets picked off trying to connect with Quez Watkins instead of just making a safe throw to continue a drive that started out with three methodical plays for 30 yards or when he gets picked off in the final seconds forcing a deep shot to A.J. Brown when Kenny Gainwell is open underneath for a potential gain to get into Jake Elliott range, these aren't necessarily bad play calls. They're quite likely bad decisions by Hurts. "All of these plays really have multiple options," Johnson said Thursday. "And the ball can go to a bunch of different places based on how the defense is presented." He also started to question Hurts' decision making on the second INT before stopping: "With two timeouts there you've got to just – we've got to put ourselves in a position." The most concerning thing about Hurts' play Monday night was his decision making, and honestly poor decisions have been behind as many of his 12 interceptions as poor throws. Hurts is naturally aggressive and it's one of the things that makes him such a dangerous player. But he's got to be smarter when it comes to understanding the situation and what is best for the team at that point in the game. Sometimes a boring eight-yard gain is the perfect play.

This just adds fuel to my fire of my dislike of Potsie Webber:

QuoteI still can't believe Nick Sirianni quite likely had Sean Desai go out in front of the Philly media a week ago Wednesday – Dec. 13 – and pretend he was still the defensive coordinator after he had already almost certainly been demoted in favor of Matt Patricia. Sirianni said after the Seattle game he didn't remember when he made the change, but he did say it was "right when game planning was going on" and "sometime in the middle of the week." And coming off the loss to the Cowboys on a Sunday, certainly the Eagles were game-planning for the Seahawks by 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Sirianni also said he didn't want to announce the change because he felt "it was competitive disadvantage if I did tell you guys." So either he sent Desai up there to hold a press conference after his demotion because he didn't want the Seahawks to know the Eagles had a made a change on the coaching staff or Sirianni didn't make the change until after the presser, which would have been Wednesday afternoon at the earliest – three days after the Cowboys game ended. I'm not sure which is worse. To Desai's credit, he's handled this with class, and by all accounts he's been willing to help out Patricia in any capacity. But if the Eagles really made the guy stand up there in the auditorium and on a live stream answering defensive coordinator questions when he had already been stripped of those duties, that's really bad form on the part of Sirianni. You just don't treat a guy like that.

Damn right!

Yeah I don't know what to make of it. Did it come from above and Nick was forced to eat it?

Is Nick feeling the heat and some of the cracks are showing?

They better not farg around tomorrow. Have an ugly win or god forbid a loss and he's gonna get lit up like a dry Christmas tree.

Listened to the Year in Review on WIP, Eagles 2023 week 1-16 recap almost forced me to jump into oncoming traffic.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Lots of other things are wrong but I just want to point this out.

Niners and Ravens are benefitting from zigging when the rest of the league (and especially Howie) was zagging hard. Loading up on LB talent. It was correct to deemphasize the position for a while, but trends like that don't last long in the NFL before the pendulum swings back and the position becomes undervalued. Eagles got away with discount LBs last year, with a great pass rush and decent coverage. This year they went deeper into the LB bargain basement so they could re-sign old guys at those other positions. Failed strategy.

PhillyPhreak54

True.

I fear the Eagles will never get away from their strategy until the main FO people are gone.

They'll always load up on DL and CB and go cheap on LB and S.

What makes it worse is the DL and CB stink this season and the coaching doesn't do anything to try to negate the weaknesses in the middle of the field.

Nor do they seem to adjust to teams saying "hey we are gonna go quick drops and neutralize your pass rush". They keep the DBs in off coverage with free releases.

QB Eagles

I am not as worried about the front office. You have no choice but to gamble on strategies, and sometimes you lose those bets. Howie wins more often than most. I don't think he's married to particular position valuations, he just misjudged how to best position the defense for 2023. Normally after you make the Super Bowl you feel pretty good about bringing back most of the guys and drafting studs like Carter to replace who you lost. You don't expect it to fall off this much without a ton of injuries.

The coaching is abysmal right now. You don't pay the coach to implement a particular philosophy, you pay them to continually adjust and come up with fixes (or at least mitigations) to the problems your team has. They are failing badly at this on both sides of the ball. No solutions, few adjustments that even seem to be addressing the problems. Buck stops with Coach S.

I wouldn't mind playing the JV squad against the Giants and spending two weeks focusing on getting shtein straight for Tampa/NO. You have to at least make the attempt to really shake things up. This version of the Eagles isn't beating anybody. Do I think this coaching staff has what it takes to make that happen? They have shown zero evidence of that.

Don Ho

Will be interesting if they lose to Giants and then continue this lackluster effort in playoffs.  Is Jughead in trouble?  Does the "well he did get them to the Super Bowl last year" free pass still valid?  I honestly can live with the Niners and Cowboys beat downs, yes it was ugly but they lost to the NFC powerhouse and Dallas always seems to kick the birds ass in one of the two meetings. Jets was the annual anomaly.  Seattle, last weeks half assed effort and today are 1000% unacceptable.  You don't lose or let that trash hang around!  Yes, zesty, old, gased personal on defense but coaching staff  has got to be held accountable and it starts with Mr. Italy.

This one is simply, I don't know, I can't hnl of a word.  Unfathomable? Shocking? Frightening?  Incomprehensible?

QuoteThe Eagles have been outscored 68-30 in the second half of their last three games, their 2nd-worst three-game 2nd-half scoring margin since 1970. They've allowed at least 17 points in the second half of their last three games for the sixth time in franchise history. The 68 points they've given up after halftime in a three-game span is 3rd-most since 1970.
