Why would anyone assume that when you go into the American Legion nobody but old white guys are in there? At my post on a friday or saturday theres a big mix of people and their families. White and black. Yes igy, there are black people in the military. Matter of fact, one of the past commanders at my local VFW is black. He served in the gulf war. The AL eligibility requirements are such that as of August 2, 1990, through present, and continuing until cessation of hostilities as determined by the U.S. government. As such, open eligibility thus applies to all current active-duty service members. That means my son is eligible and isn't even of legal drinking age yet.

Eligibility for the VFW is different. Members must be US citizens and be currently serving in the US military or have an honorable discharge from the US Armed Forces. Membership also requires military service overseas during a conflict and decorated with an expeditionary medal, a campaign medal or ribbon. Receipt of imminent danger/hostile fire pay is accepted for membership. My son has a ribbon on his dress uni for serving in the 'war on terror'. He's defiantly overseas, but I have to check with the powers that be to see if that makes him eligible for membership. My Dad, a past commander of the VFW who served in Korea, has already offered to pay his membership to both organizations.

Assuming that there are only gonna' be old white men at the AM or VFW is exactly the kind of bullshtein I'm talking about.

The way you like to go out to eat, you don't know what you're missin', if you can join or get a member to sign you in that is. Food and booze are cheap, cheap, cheap. I think myself lucky that I'm eligible for social member status at the VFW and 'sons' status at the Legion. Can't go to any orginizational meetings, can't vote on anything, but I enjoy all the other benifits. Cheap pool, food and booze, loads of activities, like pool, shuffleboard, cornhole, horseshoe, and card tournaments. All kinds of kid stuff for most all holidays. Superbowl pool, that I won nothing on, Casino nights, Texas holdem tounaments, Trivia nights, and slot machines!!. But, like has already been said, young single women are scarce. I've seen the occasional group come in with thier parents, but not often. If you're looking for that, you're spending upwards of $3.50 for a beer and around $4-5 for a mixed drink at the local sports bar. I've been there and done that. Nowadays, I just can't afford it. But.. to each his own.
