American in only slightly better than Wiz and should never come anywhere near a steak ever.

Whiz > American > Provolone > anything else

i have never asked for american cheese on a steak in my life.

I also like several varieties of the cheesesteak.

1a.  Original.  With wiz and mushrooms.  

1b.  Original with provolone and mushrooms.  

2.  Pizza steak - with provolone, mushrooms and red sauce.

3.  Hogie steak - provolone, lettuce, mayo, tomato, ketchup.

I always catch shtein for liking the hogie steak and I suspect that won't change here.  But that's cool.  Every once in a blue moon it makes for a nice alternative.

to be honest, i usually get steaks from pizza joints around here and they usually use american...i've never thought at provolone as an option

I alternate between American and Provolone if Whiz is not available (as it often isn't outside of Philly).  American tastes more like Whiz, but it's almost a fake teaser.  I usually order Provolone so that I don't miss the Whiz.  Totally different taste.

I like my cheese steaks from casapula's here in delaware.  I get Mayo, Ketchup, Fried Onions, and mushrooms, with provolone.  When im in philly i always end up at Geno's or Pats, get Wiz with, usually because the trip involves a sports event and heavy drinking

I farging hate mushrooms, but otherwise I agree with all of this.  Pizza steaks are the worst.
