Lot attendants won't be 'too aggressive' this week

The battle between the Philadelphia Eagles and Comcast-Spectacor over new policies for parking and tailgating seems to have simmered down, just in time for tomorrow's home game against the Detroit Lions.
Eagles president Joe Banner on Thursday said he had been told that parking-lot attendants will not be "too aggressive" in limiting tailgating. That was the case during last Monday night's game, when some people were asked to move from empty parking spaces but many simply stayed put.

"Our hope and our expectation is people will respond to this pretty reasonably," Banner said.

Banner said the companies that own the lots around Lincoln Financial Field will focus this season on two goals: moving tailgaters out of the driving lanes of the lots and using the available spaces more efficiently.

That second part had many fans up in arms, since it meant a crackdown on using empty parking spaces for tables, chairs, grills and tents.

But Banner, while noting that the Eagles don't control the lots where the tailgating parties are held, said the rules are not new.

"These rules existed," he said, "but they probably weren't enforced very frequently."

The Eagles and Comcast-Spectacor, which controls much of the parking near Lincoln Financial Field, had clashed earlier in the week. Comcast-Spectacor parking attendants distributed fliers to drivers, announcing new parking rules effective since last month.

The Eagles complained that the rules had been forced on them by Comcast-Spectacor and the city. Comcast-Spectacor said the Eagles had agreed to the new rules.

Ike Richman, a Comcast-Spectacor spokesman, on Thursday said his company would let Banner's comments on tailgating policy "serve as the statement for all of the parties involved."

The city, through Managing Director Loree Jones, said it is working on a parking policy with all stadium-district stakeholders, including Comcast-Spectacor and Eagles.
