and that worst case has killed many NFL players for an entire season. Dont downplay it, because when you see Bloom out there running like Terry Fox, you'll be the first one calling for his benching

I am talking about his ability to catch the farging ball. In relation to GLew and Reed, Bloom has a healthy farging advantage in terms of ability when your main farging job as a punt returner is to catch the punt. As I said, he could catch the ball, HORRENDUS turf toe and all, and fall down. That would have made him better than what was there Sunday.

Also, being that Bloom has a clue when it comes to being a punt returner, he would know, given his experience, that in the situation where Reed muffed his, you don't attempt to catch the ball. Again, the nugget of knowledge would again demonstrate far more ability as a punt returner that Glew and Reed have . Therefore, his abilities - of which you stated would all be null and void - would not be a remotely accurate statement.

My point is that even if Bloom was farged up and it slowed him down, you can cut him, but only if you have someone else to do the job. Cutting him and replacing him with faster guys does no good if the faster guys farg up the first responsibility of returning punts, which is catch the ball.

I dont think its the turnover factor, because they were freakish things that rarely happens, if at all to the Eagles.

kind of like 62 yard fg's at the buzzer

And drive extending kicks to the groin

And fumbled snaps on gw fg attempts

And Jake Plummer to Martay Jenkins

And James Mungro

And fog

And calling a timeout to vomit on the field

And Jim Plunkett

And Scott Young false starting

And Mike Michael

And Mike McCormick

John Smallwood | Birds should call Bloom - but they won't

UNFORTUNATELY, the most logical solution is not likely to be something the Eagles would be inclined to make happen.
Right now, the most sensible thing to do to address the

three-ring circus that was the

Eagles' punt-return game in Sunday's disgusting, 16-13, season-opening loss in Green Bay would be to contact disposed return man Jeremy Bloom and get him to the NovaCare Complex.

I have no idea if Bloom, the return specialist in whom the Eagles invested a year-and-a-half of effort in developing, would be the solution.

Based on the 10 punts and 12 kickoffs Bloom returned in the preseason, the former Olympic skier didn't do anything to suggest he was worth the Birds taking a flyer on him in the fifth round of the 2006 draft.

But Bloom, who hadn't played competitive football in 3 years, didn't fumble a punt that resulted in a touchdown like Greg Lewis did in Green Bay.

And during the preseason, Bloom never made the boneheaded decision to weave through a nest of people and ultimately fumble a punt that should've been left alone like J.R. Reed did in Green Bay.

I'll say without a bit of hesitation that if everything else had played out the same and the only difference against the Packers was that Bloom was the punt returner, we'd be talking about an Eagles victory instead of a loss.

Bloom might not have displayed the big-play return ability that coach Andy Reid and general manager Tom Heckert envisioned when they proudly hinted they stole him in the draft, but at least he showed he could safely catch a punt.

On Sunday, that was all the Eagles needed from their return man. On Monday night against the Washington taterskins, that might be all the Eagles need again.

But I can almost say without a doubt, that re-signing Bloom is not an action that the Eagles will take. No matter how logical it might seem to re-sign Bloom, the player you had been working with almost exclusively as your returner since the first minicamp, the Eagles won't do it.

Even if Bloom were signed just for the taterskins game so the Eagles won't hemorrhage while seeking a better solution, I can't see it happening.

Bringing back Bloom would require Reid and Heckert to also acknowledge that they screwed up by cutting him 9 days before the start of the regular season. Bringing back Bloom would require Reid and Heckert to admit that they had no credible backup plan once they realized Bloom wasn't going to be what they believed he would be. Bringing back Bloom would require the Eagles to acknowledge that they were wrong about too many things leading up to Sunday's fiasco.

Maybe it's stubbornness or perhaps arrogance, but acknowledging those kinds of mistakes just isn't something this organization can easily stomach doing.

"Ah, not necessarily," Reid responded yesterday when asked if he had regrets about putting so much faith in Bloom that he never bothered to bring in anyone to compete with him through training camp and the preseason. "We can look at all the hindsight things right now, but no, not necessarily."

If Reid still can't even admit that running an all-or-nothing gamble on a guy who hadn't played football in three seasons was a mistake, how is he going to bring Bloom back and be reminded of his mistake every day?

While Reid acknowledged that believing Lewis and Reed could handle the return job was a mistake, it was admitted with a caveat.

"Obviously, we thought we'd get it done with the guys we had there, and it didn't work out this game," Reid said. "Again, I'm not ruling out the guys that are here, either."

That Reid would even suggest Lewis just might need more experience is frightening to any Eagles fan thinking this team might go to the Super Bowl.

Without being definitive, Reid hinted that running back Brian Westbrook is a possibility or that former return man Reno Mahe or someone else might be signed.

I'd say that list of someone else, however, would not include Bloom.

Bringing back Bloom is the one option that would require the Eagles to admit that they botched this entire process from the beginning.

They'd have to acknowledge that they were wrong, and that's not something this organization has ever been that good at - even if it is the most logical thing to do.

Boy they suuuuure need Scott Young and/or Pat McCoy on the roster! No way they can cut either one of those for a guy who knows how to catch a goddamn punt.

And no way those arrogant SOBs bring Bloom back. They'll cram Mushmouth and JR down our throats and hope they do it right so then they can see "we = right; fans = wrong"

Dammit.  I was just about to post my paranoid conspiracy theory rant against fans who think the FO would rather not admit to being wrong rather than addressing a need that will improve my team.
