Most teams do...under the guise of a crappy catcher designated as the emergency guy. Jayson Werth was listed as the emergency catcher before howard went to the DL, they already had a bunch of crap reserve infielders (Werth, Dobbs, Helms, Nunez...etc...) so no need to replace that position.

Pat Gillick is still just a retard collecting a paycheck though.

Having a guy designated as the emergency catcher seems completely different than having an actual 3rd catcher.  It's like a NFL team carrying 4 qb's on the active roster.  Every now and then you might see a team do it but typically they'll just have another player on the roster designated as the emergency qb.....like B-Mitch used to do. 

3 catchers just seems wasteful to me.
