the Mets obviously, they couldn't shut up about it.

you would think losing to a 85 win team in the playoffs would be motivation enough to play well this season, obviously not
I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

Mets players and fans are all douches anyway.  How could you be a New York City baseball fan and NOT root for the Yankees?

ice grillin you

Rollins' comments would be equally meaningless if they came true or not.  He wanted to express some confidence in his team, and he now looks a bit silly for it.  Who really gives a shtein, and who gave a shtein in the first place?

disagree...on the field they would mean nothing

but if the phillies were 6-1 right now and beat the mets yesterday on a rollins game winning rbi jimmy would be a hero in the city right now and people would be worshipping him the same way people in ny are now killing him
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

That's too true, we love to boo people mercilessly, even when they do well.

Um, no..

Sorry but I dont think the Mets needed any "motivation" to beat the Phils.

The fact that the Mets were the best team in the NL throughout last season, and would have pounded Detroit is all the motivation that team needs.

Rollins stupidity just added to the fun.

Rollins or not, this team has been abysmal this season thus far, pretty much all around.

- Wasted two good efforts by Hamels, and one by Myers.
- Fielding has been atrocious, pretty much all the way around.
- Baserunning mistakes galore.
- The relief pitching has been worse than abysmal.  So bad I can't even think of an adjective that fits right now.  Was anyone at all confident in that 5-3 lead going into the 7th inning?  Or the 5-4 lead in the 8th?
- Uncle Cholly is a worse manager than Casey Stengel.  Not Casey Stengel in the 1950s.  Casey Stengel now, with 30+ years of rotting in his grave.
- The hitting had been extremely weak and inconsistent.  Far too many strikeouts with men on base.

So to summarize:
- Bad hitting
- Bad baserunning
- Bad relief pitching

I'm surprised that this team has won a game at all.

Luckily I'll have the ultimate ditraction this summer, and may miss a large portion of the Phils' games this season.  Otherwise I'll be would several televisions.

Haha @ abysmal.  Did you watch 'Friends' yesterday by any chance, Geo?

The fact Charlie Manuel is still managing the team proves Gillick sucks hard.

Friends?  I didn't watch that when it was popular.

All I watched yesterday was baseball, and the Soul game last night.

Baseball... a wonderful way of spending a vacation day.  Even if the Phillies suck more than (RJS can insert his favorite porn star here).

Sal Fasano, Ryan Franklin, Jason Werth, Karim Garcia, Antonio Alfonseca proved that already.

I'm glad Rollins displayed that confidence too. For the first time it seemed like the Phillies had an attitude like they had an objective or goal and felt that they can beat anybody. I'd rather him display confidence than capitulate to everyone else.

Myers has always been that way.

True. But to hear an everyday player say something like that was nice.

Anyways, without the benefit of hindsight, I liked the comment Rollins made. At the time, it was a good thing to say going into the season. I enjoyed it. It at least signals that Rollins wants to step  up and be a leader. I can't fault him for trying to motivate this team. Too bad a lot of the guys didn't take it to heart. As a fan, at the time, I don't know how you couldn't like it. Either they are collectively (1) scared and intimidated that they cannot live up to the expectations so are now folding and crumbling under the pressure or (2) they just don't give a shtein. Both are plausible, and I don't know which one is worse.

I really hope that now since expectations are now elevated that Howard, Rollins, and Utley don't crumble. Who would have thought that Burrell would be probably the most consistent out of the bunch (at least for now)? The run in the 2nd half was nice last year, but there were no expectations really for this team in the 2nd half. Now that they have a full season ahead of them, it seems like they just can't hack it right now.

Good day this was an off day.

Oliver Perez is currently imploding, walking four in a row and hitting Barrajas to bring in three runs.

Final tally:  three runs, one hit:

- Utley single
- Howard walk
- Burrell walk
- Helms walk
- Rowand walk
- Barajas hit batter

All with two outs.  Sele came in and struck out Eaton to end the inning.
