Yikes. What a cluster!

Sorry to hear that. I'd be rightly pissed too. So bad your friend not tipped you off then you leave a place and show up to be told they lied to you.

I owe her a drink, that's for sure. I've got stores in three counties that would be tripping over themselves to have me, I'm not worried. My old boss asks if I want to come back every couple of months, and I'd absolutely go if it wasn't a 45 minute trip each way.

That's good you have options.

45min ain't bad! I live 17 miles from my office and that's my average drive time lol

General_Failure

Yeah, but I'm out in Pennsyltucky. I get stuck behind one Amish house being moved on a flatbed, that's another 20 minutes.

You live in Houston, which is a farging hellhole.  All the zesty parts of LA, none of the good parts....and surrounded by Texas.  You have gone native.  It's time to look around and think about your choices.

45 minutes is completely out of the question for me.  That's minimum seven and a half hours of your life, utterly wasted every week.  Nevermind the car cost, which is another stand alone "hell no" reason.  1.5 hours daily trying not to lose my temper, or get hit, or stress out when the traffic looks to make me late, etc.  Life is short.  I'm not rich or even drowning in work, but first question for each new prospective job is, where is it...if it's not in the City...I don't care how much money there is in it, the answer is...only if i"m paid my full rate to drive, and only if you can tolerate driving as part of my work day, meaning you'll get me for about 5 hours a day on site.  You want me that bad, those are the terms.

For the last three plus years I've been on the same goddamn block, two miles from home.  Homeowner clients just handing me back and forth to each other...they actually horsetrade for who gets me next.

Good luck with the corporate idiots today GF.  Let us know if you get laid off...all six of us will smash that Donate icon and you'll be set.

It's a government job, I could not show up for a week and still be employed.

All accurate. The saving grace is I get mileage paid for and when I take over for my boss I get the car allowance so that helps cushion the blow. But I have been doing it for so long now that it doesnt bother me half the time. I have a show or podcast going and I am in no hurry. Unless its Friday and I just want to be home.

So I thought, too, having made a daily two hour commute for a long time.

Then I stopped, and the improvement in my quality of life was staggering.  Like, on a level with taking a new, effective anti-depressant.  Life changing better.

Today I got it in writing that I got the job I applied for and didn't get screwed.

Truly, the best part of this whole ordeal was getting to accept the job offer while flipping off my boss two inches from his face.

True story:  A couple of weeks ago, two 7th-grade girls started fighting in my "hallway" (point of order - I teach on an outdoor campus, so our "hallways" are all outside).  A big group goes around it, chanting and cheering, as middle schoolers are wont to do.

Last year, we were issued panic buttons.  All of the younger teachers in my hallway were hitting the panic button (three times, as instructed).

Me, the gen-Xer... I ran in, picked up the aggressor, and carried her out of the fight to hand her off to the admin, who ran there from the office thanks to the panic button.

The only teacher to not hit their panic button?  Yep, the old guy.  Damn technology.

I also apparently managed to knock over another student while rushing in.  I honestly don't remember doing this, but I am large (6'4" and "fluffy") and was pretty laser-focused on the fight.  A few students complained about that later, and my response was to the effect of if you're in the way of the runaway truck, you become roadkill.

I *may* have said that a little more professionally, though. :)

It was the first fight I've had to break up in a couple of years.  My school is much more peaceful than some others in my district.

Ran across this tweet today, and somehow reminded me of that fight.
