I hate my job!

I've been offered a management job with a shipping/trucking company.  Salary is pretty good (it's literally my bottom line for a salary I'd accept) and the benefits package seems to be pretty standard....so not great, but not terrible either.  Is it pretty normal for people to try and negotiate for a higher salary or improved benefits before accepting a position or would I run the risk of having the offer pulled completely?

Dillen

Yeah, it's normal to negotiate before signing on. There's always a possibility that they could pull the offer, but unless you make unreasonable demands I don't think you should worry about it. Prospective employees have the most leverage before they accept - I've seen too many people accept a job with the company's promise that they'll review pay within 6 months or a year or whatever, and it never happens. If they really want you, they'll play along as long as you're not making some ridiculous demands.

Sgt PSN

Cool.  I told them I'd call back today with my answer so I'll see if I can get them to bump the salary up a little bit, or at a minimum, guarantee a pay raise after 6 months.

Thanks.

Just got off the phone with them and didn't make any progress in negotiating for better pay because they said that the salary they've offered me is the absolute ceiling for starting salary with this position.  But they also said that they offered me the max salary right off the bat because they really do want me to get my foot in the door and gain some inside experience so that I can move up quickly.  No idea if they're blowing smoke up my ass or not, but I met with 3 different people during the interview process and all seemed to be very impressed with me and I didn't get the feeling that I was being hoodwinked.  Then again, I haven't worked in the civilian world since 1998 so wtf do I know?

I'd have liked a little more money but it's not the be all, end all.  I think the opportunity for advancement will be there for me once I get some experience working with DOT regs and unions.  Not to mention that there are very few jobs in my area that are going to pay me what these guys are offering, so it's not like they're paying me scraps.  I'll be making more money most dual income families in my area.

So yeah....I took the job and start Nov 1.  All in all, I'm looking forward to it.  It's been a great 14 months on funemployment - learned how to do a lot of home repair, put almost 4k miles on my bike this summer, got to spend a lot of time with family that I haven't seen much of over the last 18 years, and got pretty good at X-box, but I guess it's time to rejoin the work force and let someone else have my Obama bucks.

They do both, but the hub I'll be working out of doesn't have overnight routes.

Nope.  It came with Barry's number programmed on speed dial so I'm keeping that one all for myself.

Welcome back to Satan's knob.  Start polishing and start working so they can make Obamacare work.

How many weeks of vacation do you get? Instead of asking for more money like a greedy motherfarger maybe you could have gotten another week of vacay

Or instead of asking for cliche things demand the bosses parking spot. It's an alpha male thing. Goes a long way toward establishing yourself.

Just be thankful you got a job where a hair net wasn't a part of the required uniform.

PhillyPhreak54

Maybe he wants to wear a hair net whilst dispatching Large Marge to pick up a load of blow up dolls?

I start out with a week (40 hrs), but don't get that until I've been with them for 1 year.  I thought about negotiating for more vacation time but I figured that if I'm still with them in 1 year and haven't been promoted and don't get the feeling that a promotion is coming, then I'll be looking for a new job anyway so it wouldn't really be worth the trouble to negotiate for something that I may not even use.  Guess I could have tried to get the vacation time to kick in after 6mo or something, but I didn't think of it at the time.  Oh well.....learning has occurred.
