Dio??

Couldn't be.  Dio would never lower himself to apologizing for anything.

Well, I got my (un)official notice today that I have lost my job.  I got a heads-up from my meatciclehead boss, even though they are still working out the details in HR and such.

A company in Denver bought the company I worked for late 2006.  I was one of the ones that got to keep my job, even though they shut down the St. Louis office.  But that really has nothing to do with why I lost my job.

I'm a sales engineer, which means I work with pre-sales opportunities, and get paid on closed deals.  Because my group was an overlay group, there was never a real place to put us in the SE organization so I bounced around through 4 groups and 4 bosses in the past year.  During my stay with my most recent boss, the company finally got us on a real target plan that paid me on my deals, rather than paying me for the overall revenue company wide.  What happened was, they had to re-classify existing revenue into my revenue bucket, so I could get paid on it.  But, because they took the revenue from other groups, they had their commission withdrawn to give it to me.  Sucks for them, but they were getting paid on my work and my deals so it was never a fair policy from the get-go.  It hit my boss' wallet, and he didn't like that.  So, he started making waves about me and where I belonged, which led to me being RIF'd.

There is still about a 5% chance I get a job elsewhere in the company, but I'm not interested in it.  They've farged me enough over the last year, that I'm not freaking moving for them.  I might move for someone else, but not for a lateral move within this damned place.

It should be official next week that my last day is August 3rd.  It's a decent severance package (about 6 months pay), and I've been looking over my shoulder for over a year, so this is really a big relief.  Not that it doesn't suck, but a relief anyway.  Feels like a huge weight off my shoulders.

Looking for a new job sucks ass.

Oh, and, I'm going to be adding to my beer list this weekend.  No doubt.

Sorry to hear that.  Or not.  Depending on how it pans out.

Sorry to hear that, Demon.  I start a new job Monday.  It took quite a while to find a new/better gig, but I was working full-time during my search.  It might be easier if you have more time to dedicate to a job search... especially if you're still getting paid for 6 months.

Heh.  A good friend of mine JUST got laid off from them a few months back.  I remember when I first met her about 4 years ago, I was surprised to find out 3Com was still in business.  They got totally kicked to shtein by other networking companies.

Good luck, Demon.  Just make sure to wear your KISS makeup and Zubaz to all job interviews, and you'll be employed in no time.

One thing I forgot to mention, and I'm looking for smart people to help me out.  On July 2nd, I was part of a company wide "reclassification" which in effect cut my total compensation by $8K a year.  That cut affects my severance package by about $2K.

There has to be something in the law that protects an employee from getting a pay cut immeidately before a RIF.  I mean, why not just make me a janitor making $14K a year and pay my severance based on that?

I'm digging through Google, but if any one is bored.........

You probably aren't part of a union.  Any employment contract or completely at-will?  I got promoted at work and it is starting to seem much better around here.  I hope everything works out for you Demon but it sounds like you have enough skills to bounce back quickly.

Well, here's a new twist.  My present company offered me a new job, doing the same exact thing for a different business market, and it's located in St. Louis at the same pay.  And it's with a former boss I had that I really like working for.

The down side is that I will still work for the same VP that was willing to toss my career aside to win a political pissing contest, and now I have to pretend I'm so gracious for him saving my job.  I had mentally already accepted that I was gone, and it was a huge relief.  Now, if I turn down the new job they just offered me, it's a resignation, and I am not eligible for a severance package.

Good news - I have a job with an OK company.
Bad news - I wanted to start fresh somewhere else, and use that package as a nice little investment.

Life sure is funny, isn't it?

My new job blocks AIM and monitors internet access fairly strictly, from what I've heard.

Thusly, I will be indirectly complying with Dio's repeated requests for me to post less.  I'll expect others to carry the torch to annoy the ____ out of him.
