Phreak, the sole reason the bomb was dropped was NOT to get Japan to surrender (japan was negotiating with the US on a face saving manner for Japan's emperor. Sadly, it was done for reasons of a post WWII world: to let the Soviet Union know that the US was 1)atomic capable 2)willing to drop the bomb 3)Needed a serious showing because of the influence USSR would have after the war. US's muscle needed to be respected. In fact, CHURCHILL convinced FDR to delay attacking Germany and create two fronts so Germany could wipe out as many soviets as possible because of how strong USSR would be postwar. One of the reasons Stalin felt betrayed by the 'allies'. See 20 million dead soviet troops.

I'd read that they wanted to use it because the invasion was predicted to cause something like 1.4M allied casualties because of the way the country is situated.

But I'd never considered the Soviet angle and it makes sense. The nugget about two fronts and letting the Nazi's take out as many Soviets is interesting too.

Today is the employee picnic for my local workplace. And being a contractor, I'm not considered an employee. so I can't participate.

I can't say that I won't enjoy the peace and quiet in the office...but it sucks to be reminded that I'm a second class worker to a legion of people whose biggest concern is when they can finally retire on the federal dole.

you cant get mad at federal retirement then want to use tax payer money to pay you to go to their picnic....to be honest i am kind of surprised a federal agency is even having a picnic....unless they are making everyone take leave to go to it

one of the worst things a govt employee can do is pay a contractor to do anything but their work....not only are they being paid with taxpayer money they make way more than their govt counterparts...at least every one ive ever seen does...so im not really sure where the woe is me second class citizen stuff is coming from...govt contractors in general do really really well
