QuotePHILADELPHIA - Donovan McNabb is unlikely to play in Philadelphia's game against the New York Giants on Sunday because of a groin injury.

"I wouldn't bet on it," Eagles coach Andy Reid said Tuesday when asked if McNabb could start. "He doesn't look good today."

McNabb injured his groin while trying to tackle Dallas' Roy Williams after throwing an interception. Williams returned the pick 46 yards for a touchdown with 2:43 left to lead the Cowboys to a 21-20 comeback victory over the Eagles on Monday night.

Reid said McNabb had an MRI on Tuesday morning, and was waiting to see a specialist. If McNabb doesn't play, Mike McMahon probably would start against the Giants.

McMahon, listed as the third-string quarterback, played the last series against Dallas, and drove the Eagles to the Cowboys 42 before David Akers missed a 60-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds.

McNabb has played through several injuries this season, including a sports hernia that will require surgery. He walked gingerly to the podium at his post-game new conference and grimaced with every step.

Reid said McNabb is "sore more in the groin area than in the abdominal area."

McNabb's psyche is feeling worse after his interception cost Philadelphia a crucial victory. The reigning conference champion Eagles (4-5) have lost three straight games and are last in the NFC East.

"He takes a lot of responsibility on his shoulders and he was devastated by the loss," Reid said.

Definitely time to get surgery. We need him 100% for 2006. The earlier he gets it, the better. Maybe McMahon will spark this team.

Surgey NOW ::) ::)

It will take Federov forever to learn the position, let alone the system, just go with McMahon.  ;)

Speaking of ... if we go right to McMahon, why do we have neackbeard, and don't say he's the holder. I luv me sum Koy, but I have no confidence in his leading a team for any length of time. I saw how they have to clear passing lanes for Ty and him, and that is the last thing we need to have to do, is change QBs with different playing styles while breaking in mediocre receivers.

The NFL old standard.

WEST is GOD

Why not because he is the holder? That is the reason. You may not like it, but that is the reason. Akers wants only Koy.

Neckbeard isn't so bad but he can't throw the ball downfield far enough for Brown to drop it in a dramatic fashion

the one problem McMahon had in Detroit is that he tried to force to many balls and threw a lot of picks.  this year not withstanding, that's always been Donovan's greatest strength.  If Donovan doesn't play again this year, I think they would be lucky to go 3-4, 2-5 is probably more like it.

I absolutely hated McMahon when I saw him at Lehigh. If you read the updates I put up I think I bitched about him in every thread I started because not only did he look like shtein throwing but he pulled the ball down and ran more than Saint Michael of Atlanta does.

I was listening to Trotter's show on the way to work last night and he mentioned that him and Simoneau talked about that in camp - how he yanked it down too quick and Trot told him to throw it and quit running so much. And how it was probably because he wasn't yet familiar with Reid's stuff.

But he looked decent in the PS and he looked decent on MNF considering he came in cold in a tight spot.

His running ability could actually help them.

Donovan was immobile most of the year and let's be real here...would any McMahon INT's be worse than some of the slop Donny Mac has pitched out there?

SunMo

figuring who he has to throw to now, being able to scramble will be a great asset to McMahon.

we'll see though, we all know that they won't make the playoffs, so any good games we get to see from here on out will be a pleasant surprise, IMO.

I don't think Greg Lewis has played any worse than Todd Pinkston did last season. And barring some miraculous turn around where Todd actually transforms himself into a serious offensive threat, I don't think his presence would have made much of a difference if he played this year.

SunMo

no, they definitely missed Pinkston this year.  many people didn't think they would but they did.  Lewis and Pinkston are different players with different roles.

Pinkston, for all his shortcomings, the one thing he could do is stretch the defense and go up and fight for the ball.  Lewis isn't that kind of player, he's more of a possession reciever.

Last year, with Pinkston going deep and TO eating up the underneath, the Eagles passing game was deadly.  But this year, with no deep threat, the safeties played closer to the line and took away some of TO's underneath stuff.

Yeah, I don't think it's so much that I'm excited to see McMahon play, I'm just excited to see a mix up in the roster which hopefully provides some sort of spark. The same unit has been playing like shtein pretty much the whole season (especially away) so mixing it up a bit has me interested in seeing what could happen on Sunday. Maybe some mixups on defense will provide a spark, like Mikell at SS, Cole at DE, and now McMahon at QB with Westbrook maybe getting 20 carries??! It could happen, especially since McMahon probably doesn't grasp the whole offense yet.

It's going to be a more run heavy offense, at least one would think it would be after watching the MNF game and knowing that McNabb will not be playing. Let's see what transpires.

Yeah, Pinkston's deep threat possibly hurt this team, but did they ever really try going deep with Lewis? A few times early on in the season they tried to stretch the field with him but it seemed as though McNabb overthrew him and they never went back to those plays. He looked like he had a few steps on some of those DB's too.

I think just Andy has been somewhat reluctant to go deep this year too. Really, can you remember what McNabb's longest completion of the year was? I mean in actual passing distance not YAC yards. It can't be too substantial.

I think Lewis has the speed to get by DB's, but they utilize him more in the middle of the field. Maybe Andy will open it up and throw a few deep ones Lewis' way. And if they reasonably get to him and hit his hands he should catch it. If not then we know he's not much of a threat.
