Anyone seen a good movie lately?

No Country was a great movie with an all-time great villain but I'm not even sure that one makes my top 50. It sticks in my mind at least. Same with There Will Be Blood. I'm personally more into classic movies though. Over the past 15 years, I think the quality has shifted over to TV in a big way. The studios are more willing to gamble financially on new ideas in TV, and the format allows deeper storytelling. It's hard for a movie to compete with characters you have been building up a 50-hour history with. Incredible that it took 50 years for that shift to take place, I guess thanks to the FCC banning adult ideas on TV for so long.

Big studio movies are mostly lowest-common-denominator shtein. There's a lot of competence but not a lot of genius. In the indie/arthouse scene there are probably more good movies (and bad ones) than ever before thanks to how easy it is to make a film now, but again, nothing truly amazing. Nothing presenting you with images and ideas that will stick in your mind, nothing you'll find yourself referring to in real life situations. Even the very good movies are afraid to be as ambitious as something like Apocalypse Now (except for Terrence Malick's shtein, which I find ponderous).

I don't see a modern Spielberg (who is not my favorite), let alone a modern Hitchcock, Scorcese, Kurosawa, Kubrick, etc. The Coen Brothers are (were?) great but are like 60 years old now. I like a lot of the stuff put out by Nolan, PTA, and Wes Anderson, but I don't trust any of them to make a good film every time or to ever produce an all-time masterpiece.

Pixar is the great exception and they are making all-time amazing kids films. WALL-E is up there with the best of anything I've seen in the last decade. The Lego Movie was a nearly-as-good non-Pixar film, which is ridiculous for a glorified ad for legos. But not everyone goes for movies like that and it's not easy to think of kids movies at the same time you're thinking of the Godfather and Vertigo.

List of the most critically acclaimed films of the 21st century:

You'll see it's skewed toward the early 2000s. Some of that is critics still reassessing the newer movies, some of that is that the movies were genuinely better 15 years ago.

I've seen most of them in the top 50 and there's a lot of very good movies there (skip Russian Ark, though). Not sure I'd rank any of them near my top all-time.

dark knight...im assuming thats the one with heath ledger?

its virtually impossible for me to put a superhero or comic book movie up that high but that movie is farging amazing and could be in my top 50...i love it so much....did that come out after no country?

After a few watchings I've lowered my opinion on the Batman movies. Ignoring the third one because that's straight up trash, the first two aren't very good comic book movies, action movies, or dramas. They've got some amazing actors doing what they can with some hammy writing, but if I want to rewatch a comic book movie I'll still go to Punisher: War Zone or Dredd.

If anyone hasn't see it, watch spirited away. It's like mind porn for your imagination.

If someone wants a really powerful movie, watch Graveyard of the fireflies. There's no way that movie won't move you (yes, it is animated).

Agreed with QB re: Lego Movie.   I love that movie.   That's not really what we're talking about here, but was right up my personally alley where comedies are concerned.

Wall-E was in my top 3 Pixars until Inside Out came out.

Inside Out
Toy Story
Up
Wall-E
....Toy Story 3? Would have to think about what rounds out the top 5.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

New Oceans 11 with an all female cast in the works but it's called Oceans 8.

I don't care about making movies with female casts, but for fargs sake, could someone at least give them a truly original script to work with?

There hasn't been an original idea in movies in probably 40 years, so no.

I can't wait to watch Lord of the Rings, Batman, and the newest Jesus/Messiah/greatest lie ever told, etc. in 20 or so years.

Grave of the Fireflies is the only movie I know where I'm emotionally devastated before the first five minutes are over, since they show you how it ends and it's not pretty. I don't think it was necessarily made to be an anti-war movie, but it's one of the best.

Caught Suicide Squad on a hack site, thought it was half decent. Much better than Man of Steel or Batman vs. Superman.

I haven't seen Batman Vs Superman yet, but I can't imagine that it's on the same level as Suicide Squad...which I thought was really fun and entertaining, but poorly executed.  B vs S just doesn't look good at all to me.  Whenever I get around to seeing it, I feel like if I'm able to give it a "meh" that it will have drastically exceeded my expectations.
