I was, this is true.

they did the same farging thing in clear and present danger!  the whole first 20 min. takes place in Colombia, speaking Spanish for maybe 4-5 min, then a pause, and then English for the rest of the movie.  people are so farging dumb and why doesn't this bother everyone.  yes, it's a fictional movie, but man a bunch of colombians in a remote jungle coke lab all speaking perfect gringo English drove me crazy.

pig - a slow indy burn that could have easily morphed into something really slow and boring but nic cages performance keeps it simmering and makes it a great watch minus one ridiculous scene that feels like its in a different movie

8/10

zola - very impressive debut from janicza bravo...she has a ton of sean baker in her and this movie has that same style of his where its really funny yet shines a light on a very serious topic that affects the fringes of our society

6.5/10

red rocket - speaking of sean baker he strikes again with red rocket which is a good but not great movie with an award worthy lead performance by simon rex who makes the anti hero scumbag character somehow likeable and sympathetic with an amazing sincere performance

7/10

The Picabo Street doc was really good.  Had a crush on her when I was little.  I was worried that she might be a Trumper in present day since she's from Idaho but it seems she is not, or at least they didn't go into that.

this is fun...gene siskel reviewed beyond the valley of the dolls, a sexplotation film in the 70s ebert wrote

fun fact: gene siskel mentions he did not get a boner watching it...so now you get to think about gene siskel's boner
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

the worst person in the world - an anti rom com rom com. always like to go fresh into these things so i knew little about it. its quite original and quite good though it drags a bit in the last qtr. a very true to life story of a late 20s/early 30s woman going through her life trying to figure what and who she wants to be, and it doesnt pretend to have any answers. most of these movies end with a rich handsome guy but this aint it. really dug it. 4/5

dune - i cant say it was horrible but i kind of felt it was. i have no basis of understanding of this world, never read the book, but felt confused and lost from day one. i tried reading the wikipedia recap of it in the middle and still had no idea. its a planet in another galaxy in the future and they want to control spice production? what was with the things in the nostrils? why did some people have british accents? it looked cool, i guess. i dont know. im not the intended audience for this, and thats fine, but why was it nominated for an oscar. 1/5

The Boeing 737MAX doc on Netflix was pretty good. Eye opening and maddening.

Yeah you'd like it.

It shows how the merger with McDonnell Douglas farged the culture there and that helped lead to the MAX failures. Some of the stuff is just flat out appalling.

The Batman - meh. Was getting great reviews and I had zilch to do after work. Robert Pattinson was a poor choice. I never saw the twilight movies but he's a pale emo and looks more like a vampire through the whole movie. Doesn't make a good Bruce Wayne. The bat suit looked sloppy and the bat mobile is now a muscle car. Pattinson has one emotion the entire movie: depressed. The riddler plays a serial killer based off the zodiac which somewhat saves the film until the horrid ending. The cat woman is a smoke bomb. The rest of the movie is dumb contortions of the previous films. Dc hit their sweet spot with the Bale Batman's.

West side story - read the book in jr high, never saw a live version. Decent adaptation to the big screen.

MDS

west side story - spielberg directed the farg out of this. he was showing off and running up the score, like james harden doing increasingly fancy step backs against the magic. but thats the thing. he was playing the magic. its an adaptation of play and a remake of a movie thats basically a classic. we're not really in amazing script territory here. ultimately this was unnecessary, they just made a fancier and essentially better version of a 60 year old movie that is an unapologetic rip off of romeo and juliet. great. 2.5/5 with a 5 for steve

licorice pizza.  meh - not terrible but I didn't care about any of it.

it's also kinda creepy.  I'm surprised the alt right nerds are not screaming about how you couldn't make that movie with a 28 year old man and 15 year old girl. or maybe they are I don't care.

the left was way more up in arms about it than the right...mostly cause no one on the right has ever herd of PTA or the movie but also if they have they dont do the faux outrage thing even 1% as much when its a white man behind it...particularly when its not politics

Batman- saw it this morning...really good.... I think I'd give the nod to dark knight cause it has a crazy high rewatchability factor where this is a one time viewing but take that out of the equation and this is the best comic book super hero movie ever....not a high bar but it was great cause it wasn't even a super hero movie it was Seven with Batman as the detective. And damn she's been a goddess but Zoe kravitz is HOF hot in this.  I just saw here this week in soderbergs movie so quite the ZQ double dip.

6.5/10 regular movie, 10/10 super hero movie

Rome

Death On The Nile wasn't bad.  Gal Gadot might be the worst actress in history.  She's got a first class ticket to Pound Town waiting anytime she wants it.  The chick who played Jacqueline was hot too.

I watched 3/4 of the movie before figuring out Russell Brand was the doctor.   It was a secondary part but he was surprisingly good.  Played it straight up which surprised me.

The cast was better than the story but Agatha Christie's mysteries are wretched anyway.  Scenery was amazing, the boat was cool and the music was incredible.

I'll give it 3 stars out of 5.
