Rogue One was great. Now that's the way a SW film should be. Not the prequels and definitely not TFA. I rank it right up there with the originals. The ending was just badass.

Yeah.  There's nothing "wrong" with the movie.  The acting is good.  It just didn't have the power or gravitas that you'd expect to be inherent in that story.

nerd ratio at the theater ?

Dropped my daughter off at school at 8:50, was at the Neshaminy mall at 9 which was start time but they show so many trailers I knew I was good. I splurged and spent the $11 to see it in 3D IMAX. I asked the ticket girl how many people were in the theater and she said 89 but it holds 500. I was middle center, great seats. I went by myself. I looked around and there were a bunch of other nerds seated by themselves too. I'll probably wait a week or so to go see it again.

Rogue One - good first third, meh mid third, very good final third.  Definitely suffers a bit from characters not being fleshed out but has a more adult tone than the others and I definitely felt that the last few mins were exciting/moving.  B+

I sort of see what you're getting at with the secondary characters but I thought they did a great job developing the backstory of the main characters. The adult tone was most welcome. That's the way all SW films should be. I hate when they try to add comedy, shtein is never funny and it just takes away from the film. I had enough comic relief from K 2. His monotone dry one liners were funnier than anything they had in the prequels or TFA.

the han solo humor was great in the first two movies, it got corny by return of the jedi. plus, those farging ewoks.

TFA was ok to me. would've been better if the end result wasn't another trip down death star lane.

I liked TFA - it just had a retread plot.  My only fear is they stick too close to OT model and next one mirrors Empire too closely.

Two main characters are fleshed out ok in Rogue - I just found Rey in TFA to be better acted and more compelling than Jyn in this.

But the big set piece / last portion of this movie >>>TFA

no, I cant see that happening. then again, I didn't see TFA being what it was either.

How I rank the Star Wars films:

Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
Return of the Jedi
Rogue One
Revenge of the Sith
Attack of the Clones
The Phantom Menace
The Force Awakens

ROTJ isn't a very good movie except for the end.

New Hope
ESB

ROTS/Rogue One/TFA

When The Force Awakens came out on BluRay, I spent most of a weekend marathoning the whole franchise. Episodes I and II were so farging horrible, worse than I remembered. I had a hard time getting through them. I tend to rate all the Star Wars movies about a star and a half less than the SW fans do, so when even the fans aren't happy with a film, look out below.

Force Awakens was the kind of low-risk, low-originality movie I expected with the franchise out of Lucas's hands, but it was a fine popcorn picture and achieved basic competence in a lot of areas that the first two prequels did not.

I'll probably see Rogue One right before they yank it from theaters.

Jedi redeems itself with the ending. Same with TPM and AOTC. TFA doesn't have that luxury, (super nerd alert) but taking a person who just learned about the force 20 minutes ago and having her defeat a trained Dark Jedi who's of the Skywalker bloodline is absurd. That on top of it being a retread just drops it down for me. Finn's character was too corny for my taste. I didn't mind Rey but I thought Jyn fit more into the Star Wars universe. Acting in Rogue One was better too.
