There's really nothing else, Ricky. The US is full of morons. Thusly, good shows never last and crappy shows become hits. See Criminal Minds, CSI: Miami, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Two and a Half Men. Basically anything on CBS.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

In all fairness, there haven't been many good network TV shows over the past ten years. Simpsons (not nearly as good as it once was), Arrested Development (moved around, canceled), Family Guy (moved around, canceled, brought back, not nearly as good as it once was) are the only ones that come to mind.

HBO and FX seemed to single-handedly turn the TV landscape around and some of the other networks have improved drastically over the past year or two. I am not horribly offended by the idiocy of EVERYTHING on TV now. There was a time when every network from 8-11 had nothing but 'According to Jim' clones and reality television shows, but now things seem to be getting better.

TV is still the redheaded stepchild of the big screen, but at least it isn't as awful as it used to be.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

Basically, Lost should have followed what a show like 24 does. You can have a seriel drama, but to expect a seriel drama to go on for 5 years with the same momentum was poorly thought out.

Lost should have compartmentalized it's seasons, having each season independent of the others. As of right now, if you have never seen Lost before, it would make no sense to jump in now and know what is going on. 24 on the other hand, you  can watch any season from the start, and not be lost in what everything is about. Yes, 24 throws back to previous years, but they don't have a throw back as an intruption of the plot. You can watch season 5 of 24 without ever had seen season 4. And it still makes sense.

Lost can not pick up any new viewer because of this, you need to have had seen 2+ seasons of the show for almost anything to make sense of what is going on.

At least Lost is original

beat me to it wing

gilligan
land of the lost
lost in space
blah blah blah

with a little twin peaks mixed in

their aint nothing original about lost

whats most funny is watching all the sheep continue to get strung along waiting for some big shockers when in reality their is none...the show will slowly dirft into oblivion without ever really revealing anything special and the few still watching it will ask them selves what the hell was i doing for the past four years...just as now there is a mass exodus of people saying what the hell am i doing watching this show
Never saw Twin Peaks but the concept of Lost is nothing like the other shows you mentioned.

I missed the entire 1st season of Lost but was intrigued enough with the season 2 premier to get it on DVD and get caught up. Same applies to 24, never was a fan until season 5's opener. I wound up buying seasons 1-4 to get caught up.

Not many people are going to spend $200+ to get caught up with a television show.

The ratings speak for themselves. Lost has gradually lost views every season. While 24 has progressivly gained viewers every season.

I got Lost seasons 1 and 2 for free, 24 seasons 1-4 was on sale through Amazon for $120. (Just sayin)

Whats killing Lost is their new time slot, that was a dumb move.

SunMo

i would think that the increased usage of DVRs would affect all TV ratings.  i can't think of one show that i actually watch in it's timeslot

The fact that is almost impossible to join in with Lost without getting the dvd's to past season (which is not too common for a person to do) plays a giant role in the declining interest in a show. Generally, shows hit their high point and its all downhill from that point. For Lost, the high point was the start to season 2. But all the repeats and no advancement in story caused people to jump ship, as well as it being against the impossibly stupid American Idol.

Lost wasn't moved more so because of Idol. ABC feared an increased audience for the horrificly bad Criminal Minds with their post-Super Bowl shot. Greys Anatomy shot off last year with that, and they thought the same thing would happen here. So, to protect Lost, they moved it to 10. Minds ended up not gaining audience and the entire thing was a horrible move by CBS (us tv dorks called that one).

However, the fact that Lost is one extreamly complicated story spread over x seasons is what makes it so good to the fans of the show. But, ABC's schedule is a joke, outside of Sunday and Thursday. Lost has failed as a 9pm show because nothing can succeed after it. So it's now either gonna be an 8pm show or 10pm show. Chances are next year it gets held off until January while ABC tries to establish some kind of programming on wednesdays (or another day, if it gets moved).

On a side note, Lost does have pretty high tivo/dvr numbers. It's the #1 show on itunes, and a high selling tv dvd show...despite being more expensive than a comedy show to buy. So it's not all bad for Lost, but around 4 million viewers (more of them older) have deserted the show in the past year. It's surprising to me, I still enjoy it and am captivated by it, but again, I have better taste than everyone else.
