You don't understand mythology/religion etc. then, because they parallel Lost and both are left up to interpretation. The big story lines were wrapped up but because different people believe different things no one will ever agree. The writers have even mentioned there would be a certain level of interpretation they're leaving up to the viewer, the first set would be immediately after the show ended, the next set would be about 5 years later.

I'm done with the show, I had to pick a mythology and write a paper on it so I chose Lost. The professor had only seen a few episodes but he even remarked "this show seems like a lot of viewer interpretation".
