I get Rome's point: if they don't re-sign Hurts and draft a cheaper option it gives them the cap freedom to sign/keep players. My counter point would be franchise qbs don't grow on trees, he's at least a top 10 qb but probably top 5, it's the most important position in sports, there's zero guarantee the new player will be as good, it'll take 2-3 years for them to play at this level, Howie's a cap magician and they have a ton of draft capital to fill out free agents who leave.

is rome suggesting the eagles should never have a franchise qb and just repeatedly draft them in the 1st or 2nd round, then trade them before its time for payday?

do i see this correctly

it's worse than that he's suggesting no teams should

I do understand the argument for moving on from Hurts, but if the team thinks that what he's doing now is sustainable even for just a few years, you gotta pay him. And right now his trajectory is still pointing up. Look what he did mostly as a pocket passer this week.

You know Howie isn't going to be stuck with an expensive bad QB, look how he was able to move on from Wentz. Albatross contracts is a Phillies concern, not an Eagles one.

this is mostly because hes throwing to aj brown and has a great line...hurts is much better than i ever imagined but hes not a t1 qb.

lets just give him the kyler murray deal, to make it easy. murrays deal is basically 4 years. the 5th year its a $20 mil cap dead cap hit. so in a everything goes horrible scenario, youre basically committing to jalen for 4 years then you can eat it and get out. aj brown wont even be 30 then, devonta will be younger. if he has those 2 guys, someone on his level will be able to produce.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

hurts has to show something in a postseason or two...his progression to an mvp favorite this year has been unreal and i would expect him to play much better now and at home than at tampa last year but i need to see him perform at a high level against a legit post season defense after that absolute debacle last year...he doesn't even need to win but he cant be the reason they lose

In that case, please to explain.

Best case scenario is what, you land another Hurts...then move on from him...all the while having extra money for...?

The Eagles wouldn't have the stacked roster they have now if they were having to pay a franchise quarterback salary.

I'm not advocating for them not to sign Hurts.  I'm not advocating that they let him walk or trade him either.

What I'm saying is they let Wentz walk after paying him franchise money.  They drafted Hurts and then surrounded him with the best roster I've ever seen in Philly.  They literally already did what I'm suggesting they might consider doing again if they don't see Hurts as a 10-yr starter.

Diomedes

You seemed to be arguing that having a franchise qb is inadvisable whoever he is, that instead of paying a good qb market value past his rookie deal, you let him walk and replace him with the younger cheaper prospect, ad infinitum--the idea being that the money is better spent elsewhere, I guess, even if you're letting great players go...on that part I'm still not clear---but now you seem to be saying that of course you keep and pay a guy like Hurts for 10 years...so I still don't understand

Yes the argument is that it's inadvisable to drop megabucks on even a very good QB unless he's a proven game-breaking alien like Mahomes. There's a lot of one-year and two-year wonders, and having a passable starter on a rookie contract is like a financial cheat code in the NFL. You definitely don't want to be stuck getting Flacco performance from a Flacco contract, and from a championship-focused perspective you might not even want to be stuck with a HOFer in his peak years like Rodgers was if it's going to torpedo the ability to spend on the rest of your team and keep your ceiling in the middle of the playoffs.

I trust the Eagles to figure out what Hurts is worth, and Howie is a bit of a financial cheat code himself, so I don't really get being nervous about how this plays out.
