Since I don't follow this shtein closely enough anymore someone tell me what the plan is for the offseason.
Hextall dumped a lot of shtein contracts and I know there are some talented prospects on the blue line and down the middle. Who's likely to come up from the minors next year?
Their wings suck. What do they do about that?
Do they resign Nuevirth?
Are they fully out of cap hell or are they still paying some of these dinosaurs more than they're worth?
Answers. Provide them.
My plan would be:
Sign Stamkos. Don't know if they have the cap space but Hextall seems savvy enough to clear space out to get it done. Long shot but lets dream.
Trade Morin/Cout/pick to the Lightning for Drouin. Young winger with a ton of talent.
Like Ghost, I think they'll let Provorov/Sanheim/Konechny start the season in the minors, then bring them up 10 games into the season.
Futures bright
I've been sort of vaguely following the Drouin thing... is he really worth getting? Seems like he's been a little bitch this season.

He is a little bitch, but who cares, he has a ton of talent. The Lightning need young D-men. Rumor during the trade deadline is the Flyers were the front runners for him. I think they try trading for him again during the draft.
Fine. as long as I'm interpreting his bitchness accurately.
What about Mason/Nuevirth/Stolarz? The playoff pants-soiling is a bit of a concern I'd say...
If platoon Neuvirth/Mason again. Mason was great during the regular season. Competition is a good thing. Stolarz can marinate another year, he's still young.
i think the drouin thing is past now...hes played fantastic for tampa and with stamkos all but gone to Toronto they cant afford to lose another dynamic offensive player who is also super young...the wild card in this being if drouin still holds a grudge and demands a trade...but if all he truly wanted the whole time was to be called up and it was a hockey thing versus having something against yzerman or tb personally then i don't see why they would ever get rid of him...guess we will truly find out how drouin feels in the summer
neuvirth is under contract for another year so they don't need to worry about signing him....they could trade him if they feel stolarz is an nhl goalie....stolarz was really good in Allentown this year
flyers do have some flexibility with the cap this offseason...but i suspect hextall remains patient and lets the young defenseman develop for another year before he makes a bigger splash
a lot would cure the flyers offense from in house if Giroux and jake would perform like the superstar money they are being paid....don't get me wrong they still should add a mid level winger that can provide punch in goal scoring...but people like matt read and and sam gagner wouldn't seem so awful and we might not yell as loud at cooter to score more if giroux and jake formed a dominant first line...voracek seemed to be obviously hurt in the latter parts of the season so with a summer off hopefully he comes back and is himself again...and speaking of cotourier i think hes going to have a huge breakout season next year if he can stay healthy
I have thought the same thing about Couter for the last couple of years. He's a really nice piece to have on the team because he's competent on offense and excellent on defense, but he just hasn't made that step forward on offense. I'm starting to doubt it will ever happen.
Totally agreed about Giroux/Jake needing to produce more, but I also don't think they will ever be superstars. Each of them are nice players, but I don't think either of them have offensive dominance in their repertoire.
i think cooter played leaps and bounds better offensively this year it just didn't translate on the score sheet...in previous years you were hoping to see something different and didn't...at least this year i saw it....he was so much stronger on the puck and his ice awareness was ten fold improved....i think/hope it will translate in a more tangible way next year...like pucks in the back of the net
i think jake has superstar potential like he showed last season...he was on a huge upward trend his whole career until this year with the injuries....i agree on giroux....he is what he is at this point...
I guess I saw last year as Jake's ceiling, but I'd be thrilled to be wrong about that.
that ceiling was more or less superstar tho...he was incredible that year...I think he was top 3 in scoring....if that's what he is the rest of his prime then hes worth it.....on the other hand if he falls off his contract becomes a huge albatross....I also think he only had 25 goals that year.....that can and should be improved on
He's never been a great finisher, though. And while top 5 in scoring is nice, I guess I don't consider a player who scores less than 1ppg to be a real superstar in the NHL, but that's just me. Having said that, if he's a consistent 75-80 point player, he is certainly worth his contract. I'm just not sure that he can consistently achieve that kind of production.

Really wish this would have happened at the deadline. Drouin is a friggen stud and the Lightning aren't trading him after what he's done in the playoffs.
they were never trading him period...the whole controversy was overblown...especially with stamkos probably being gone
They sat him the entire season until there were injuries and they were forced to play him. Why drum up a fake market for a young winger with his talent? Makes no sense.

Draft prediction: They trade #18 and Sam Morin to move up into the top 10 of the draft...and take a forward.
Yeah, there's been rumblings about that for a while. Could easy be a case of smoke=fire.
I'd love to see Morin develop and become that monster defender, but from what I've heard/read, his offensive game is lagging a bit.
if you cant get into the top 3 in this draft its a waste to move up
and yeah morin has been a huge disappointment...not even sure how much value he has at this point
This years draft is supposedly only slightly worse than last year and they picked two great players after 3. My hope is someone values Morin's size and sees some potential.
but its a three player draft...not a huge gap from 4 to 18....it is deep which bodes well for them having 5 picks in the top 80
25 years ago today the flyers drafted peter forsberg....who would of course be traded for a once in a lifetime superstar...
guess who btwn the two never won a stanley cup?
Buddy Ryan?
Looks like the Flyers will get the additional fourth round pick from Arizona this year for the Pronger/Gagner trade. That would make 11 picks total.
Hextall traded #18 and #79 to Winnipeg for #22 and #36.
I've watching this whole goddamn dumbass draft waiting for this pick and Hexy Magic trades it.

So did McKenzie. But the same is probably true for him...
it's true of draft coverage in most leagues but nothing is more complimentary than nhl coverage
I had to laugh at McGuire verbally blowing the Flyers after the pick: "People better buckle up. The Flyers are good, and they're getting better!"
hey as long as it gives us wood
dirty little secret is that they wanted gauthier bad and if they had taken him at 18 it would have been a sick pick
I don't even hate on the Russian it's a hockey draft who has a clue but to try and pretend hexy worked the system is a joke
he missed on his guy
The only thing that would give me wood at this point is a farging Cup.
And yeah, Gauthier would have been a great pick and would have met their biggest need.
They moved up 43 slots into the second round and only had to drop 4 in the first to get there. And Rubitsoft was the 15th rated player in the draft and would have been higher if it weren't for the commies in Russia giving the kids Ivan Drago pills.
They got a kid they liked and considering Hexy's track record so far, I'll trust him on this one.
I didn't watch the draft, and that's good trade value, but my buddy said after the Canes took Gauthier Hextall was dropping F bombs. To be honest this Ruski they drafted sounds like a typical Laughton type pick.
He definitely was. They flashed a shot of him when Gauthier was picked. That said, if he was that hellbent on getting him, he wouldn't have gambled by trading down.
he got greedy...if you like gauthier that much who gives a shtein about the stupid second round...they had a billion picks to begin with...if anything you should be trading up not worrying about working the second round
I agree with this ^^^^...sure it's a deep draft but they already have a ton of picks. The Ruski just reeks of defensive forward type who will never make any real impact where as Gauthier or Bellows are wingers with scoring potential which is exactly what they need.
Let's see what they get with 36 before we get the torches and pitchforks out.
hardly torches and pitchforks....hexy is the man....but no one is above criticism
21. Carolina Hurricanes
Julien Gauthier, RW, Val-d'Or (QMJHL)
Scouting notes: Gauthier was one of the top goal scorers in the CHL this season, and he was the only draft-eligible player to make Team Canada's team at the WJC. Gauthier is an exciting and dynamic scorer who brings a lot of plus physical attributes to the table. He is a 6-foot-4 forward who is a good skater, and I'd classify him as a high-end one for a big man. His defensive game could use some work, though, as he can be a little loose on his positioning.
Team fit: Gauthier becomes one of the top young forwards in the Carolina organization. While he's not at the level of Sebastian Aho, he is a very talented goal scorer with the ability to draw fans out of the seats with "wow" plays. He will need time to improve his defense and play at a quicker pace. He could take a few seasons, but it's not crazy to project him as an NHL regular in two to three seasons.
22. Philadelphia Flyers
German Rubtsov, C, Russia U18 (MHL)
Scouting notes: The well-rounded Rubtsov was the top player on the inaugural Russia under-18 team this season, and showed well in international play. His skills aren't elite, but he shows good hands and is able to create space for himself. His hockey IQ is very impressive, as he displays great patience with the puck, sees his options well and always finds himself involved with the play.
Team fit: Rubtsov becomes one of the highest-picked Russians by the Flyers in a generation. Rubtsov joins Travis Konecny at the top of their prospect ranks. Despite the "Russian Factor," he may cross the pond fairly soon and make his way up the depth chart into being an NHL regular in a couple of seasons.

Pascal Laberge is a tough and spirited two-way forward with a high level of hockey sense. Hunts for turnovers and causes havoc whenever he is on the ice. Uses his size well to shield the puck, exert physical force, and win board battles. Has a good set of goal-scorer's hands, but tends to use them more to pass than anything. All-in-all, an efficient, yet exciting, two-way forward with potential to develop into a playmaking goal scorer.

Drafted in the eighth round of the WHL Bantam Draft by the Everett Silvertips, Hart could very well be the first North American goaltender off the board in the upcoming NHL draft. Through 61 games this season, Hart sits second in the WHL with a 2.15 goals against average and first in wins (35) and shutouts (6).
While somewhat undersized by today's goaltending standards, Hart's ability to control his crease is one of the biggest positives to his game. He plays with a calmness between the pipes that benefits his ability to move post to post and come up with timely saves.
Hart took the reigns during the 2014-15 season stealing the starting job from the veteran Austin Lotz. He led them through the first round of the playoffs and has since controlled the crease for the Silvertips. He has Everett locked into a playoff spot this season and knows that it will take his calm play and hard work ethic to help drive his team further into the WHL playoffs.
NHL Draft Projection:
There likely won't be any goalies going in the first round of the NHL draft this season and with Hart looking like the top North American backstop in the draft, we could see someone land the Silvertips netminder in the top seven to ten picks of the second round.
Quotables:
At 6-foot-1, he's not a monster, but he also won't let his frame dictate his worth...Hart would like to improve on his puckhandling ability, but otherwise he has a lot of nice attributes. The youngster prides himself on his calm in the crease and he plays a reactive hybrid style.
A tad undersized when he fell to the Tips in the eighth round of the 2013 bantam draft, the extra work with goaltending coaches made Hart already technically sound when [he] debuted with Everett for two games during the 2013-14 season.

Wade Allison – Tri-City Storm
After a slow start thanks in part to some nagging injuries, Allison has turned on the jets and shown us what he's capable of. He's a power forward who isn't afraid to attack or take the body. When he's on his game, he's very hard to stop.
His second half surge helped Tri-City storm into the playoffs on a high. The Storm swept Sioux Falls in the first round. They followed that up by winning a decisive Game 5 over Waterloo to advance to the Clark Cup Finals. They open Friday night against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
Allison helped pace the Storm to the Finals by putting up 7 points in 8 games, while leading the team with 40 shots. At 6-foot-2 and 206 pounds, Allison already has the size and strength needed for the next level. He's not done growing. He's gaining confidence by the day.
Scouts loved Allison's second-half surge. He jumped an incredible 130 spots from midterm. He checks in at 62nd on the North American skaters list now. He's a bargain anywhere in the third round.

Following the 2014-15 season the Calgary Hitmen lost two of their established offensive weapons in Adam Tambellini and Connor Rankin, and as the 2015-16 season began it seemed likely that the Vancouver Canucks were going to keep Jake Virtanen up in the National Hockey League for the season (they ended up doing so). As a result, not much was expected of a very young Hitmen club. But over the course of the season, a handful of forwards grew to fill the hole that Virtanen left in their line-up and helped push them into the post-season. Carsen Twarynski is arguably the best of those young forwards.
Along with teammate Jake Bean, Twarynski was probably the most consistent Hitmen player over the 72-game regular season schedule. He's a well-rounded player who uses his size and frame intelligently. He's not often beaten in corner battles and he plays with a bit of an edge, though he's not one to take careless penalties. He's a good skater, passes well and has a good shot, and he's able to get to the front of the net effectively and create trouble for the opposition. However, his best asset is his compete level: he just keeps working and battling throughout a 60-minute game. You could make a pretty compelling argument that he has no specific holes in his game, but he also doesn't have many attributes that are truly high-end except for his work ethic and competitiveness. That trait drew him frequent praise from coaches and scouts during the season, and it's that trait that's likely to help him improve as his career progresses. His competitiveness elevates every other trait he has.
NHL clubs often value players based on traits, and decisions on whether or not to draft a player are usually informed by how much of each attribute they have in their organization. Few players have the combination of skill, size and competitive fire as Twarynski. He'll be a unique addition to any club's prospect pool.
NHL Draft Projection:
It's hard to say where Twarynski might be selected. He could go anywhere between the third and fifth rounds, depending on the needs of the various teams selecting.
this twarynski cat played with sanheim and fazleev in juniors so their scouts im sure saw a ton of him
Interesting that the report lists LW/D. Looks like the draft board puts him at LW.

Connor Bunnaman, C – Guelph Gryphons
Brings a great mixture of grit, size and skill. The Gryphons had a host of good forwards and one, Austen Keating, is actually a 1999 birthday, so he'll be one to watch for next year's OHL draft. Bunnaman is viewed as one to keep an eye on for the early rounds of this year's draft.

QuotePhiladelphia Flyers: B+
Organizational assessment: I liked the Flyers' first few picks, and even though I'm generally against the idea of taking goalies high, Carter Hart is a good candidate if you were going to take a netminder in the second round. Wade Allison was a little high for me, but he was a riser this season so I can see the argument. The rest of their Day 2 picks were guys I'm fine with, but not guys I loved. David Bernhardt could be a sleeper though, and some Swedes with whom I spoke recently were pumping his tires.
First-round pick: The well-rounded German Rubtsov was the top player on the inaugural Russia under-18 team this season, and showed well in international play. His skills aren't elite, but he shows good hands and is able to create space for himself. His hockey IQ is very impressive, as he displays great patience with the puck, sees his options well and always finds himself involved with the play.
Notable Day 2 picks: Pascal Laberge brings a solid base of intangibles to the table, shows a good work ethic every shift and doesn't shy away when the energy level ratchets up a few notches. Laberge is an above-average skater with a very good top gear, which allows him to separate off the rush. He's a creative playmaker who can dangle and create the occasional highlight-reel moment as well as consistently set his teammates up for scoring chances. He's not the best defensively, which is concerning as a center, but he is trending upward.
The CHL Goalie of the Year, Carter Hart is a very smart goaltender. His knowledge of how to read the game and anticipate pucks and his proper positioning in the net is high-end. Any scout you talk to about Hart comes back talking about how easy he makes it look and how he never gets out of his technique on tough saves. His athleticism is fine. He moves around at a solid level, and he has an above-average glove hand, but he doesn't have that explosive element in his game.
The best player during the USHL playoffs, Wade Allison turned me from a skeptic into a semi-believer of him as an NHL prospect. Allison is a pretty good skater (he finished toward the top in nearly every skating-related skills competition at the USHL top prospects game), showing a solid top gear and first few steps. He's a smart player with the puck, but he generates more chances for himself than his teammates. Allison was a shots-on-goal machine during the season and playoffs, and he could be a legitimate goal-scorer as a pro.
Connor Bunnaman works very hard and despite not having All-World skill, got trusted with scoring line time in Kitchener due to his effort level and his above-average hockey sense. I've misspelled Tanner Laczynski's name more than once, but on the ice he has solid puck skills and a quality wrist shot; unfortunately, he isn't elite at one particular thing and isn't that quick. David Bernhardt has some sleeper potential as a big defenseman with skill. He'll get up into attacks with decent hands and shooting ability but isn't the best on his checks.

It's hard to criticize the Flyers' system. Talented all-around centers? Check. Dynamic big defensemen? Check. Ridiculous goaltender depth? Check. Depth through their amateur and professional ranks? Check. Players with star upside? Check. They don't have an Auston Matthews-caliber player in the pipeline, but that player doesn't stay in your system longer than three months anyhow. Ron Hextall emphasizes patience in developing players, so I do expect this system to remain at a high level for another two seasons as the build continues.
