First the good:
- The pass/run ratio was closer than ever before (34/29) in Big Red's tenure. Morninwheg must be running the offense these days.
- Westbrook had 20 carries (it's not much, but I've wanted to see him do that with Wiz on the field for years).
- Jason Avant had a decent game today (3 rec, 54 yds, 1 TD).
Now the bad (and there's a lot of it):
- Wiz completed less than half of his passes today. How long before the "KE-VIN!" chants start? The over/under line says 3 weeks - place your bets.
- Sheldon Brown tied for the most tackles for the Eagles today. A terrible, yet telling, stat.
- I almost :puke when I realized it, but today's punt returns actually made me miss Reno Mahe.
- Why was Mushmouth returning punts when he didn't do it much in the past? Whose gem of an idea was that, and why does he still have a job?
- What posessed J. R. Reed to go anywhere near the football on that last punt by the Packers?
- Does the ST coach still have a job, and if so, why?
- How many penalties did the Eagles commit today? Way too many.
- In short, the Eagles weren't well prepared for today's game.
The ugly:
- See above.

i hope he just paniced and had a brain fart as that is the first thing you learn in football regarding punt returns. close game, ball lands in front of you, get the farg out of the way.
any way you look at it there is no excuse for it.
we'll be talking about this one for a long time.

someone needs to tell this dude that they're not "rocket passes", we call them "worm burners" in these parts.
He put more effort into that rant than the offense and special teams put into the game. Guy needs to chill out.
I don't have the time (or interest) to read all that right now. Maybe tomorrow... maybe.

You might get your wish. Apparently they are having him in for a talk.
I've given it quite a bit of thought, and I'm really, really glad they lost this game. I mean, if they'd won, that lingering spectre of a possible undefeated season would really be a distraction heading into Week 2.....
just heard them talking about this on WIP then went to the emb and checked it out
spadaro on the reed fumble:
"Am I the only one who thinks Brent Celek came up with that Reed fumble at the end of the game and that the Eagles got rooked a little bit? Why wasn't there a review?"
:-D who cares. They never overturn those.
what are they going to do, stick a f-in camera in the bottom of the pile to see who had the tighter grip on the ball? Whoever comes up with it when the pile clears...period
Spadaro is smart
hes in utter desperation mode trying to do anything possible to take the attention away from his boss and put it on something else
well, Celek had the ball when pile cleared, but they had already made the call. at the time i wondered how they could make the call so quickly, but i just assumed that the referee coming in from the other side had a clear view of a packers player falling on the ball

On Reid's side here, at least Westbrook had 25+ touches elsewhere yesterday, including 20 carries. Usually, he is kept out of the return game and also underused in the run game.
Still, I am having trouble figuring out how this team completely forgot to have an NFL-caliber return man catching punts. Hell, they would have been better off not having a returner. Seriously. Just let the punts roll out and die.
what happened to bethel johnson? we need to make a trade or sign someone ASAP. Cut Greg Lewis, he's horrible.

Bethel is a KR, so he'd be replacing Reed.
I have no issue with Reed. He didn't make any mistakes on kickoffs, and he was put in a bad position in the middle of the game to also be fielding punts.
It's Reid/Segrest that should be shot. Like I said, at worst you tell the return man just to run away, or you put on an all-out block and have no return man.

I think I have probably watched at least a couple hundred football games now...and that was the first time I have ever seen anyone dive for a punt.
One of the single dumbest things I have ever seen a player do.
Still, there are no less than 10 guys on the Eagles' roster or coaching staff that are more to blame for the loss than the fencejumper.

Reed makes $15k a week to return kickoffs.

Isn't it obvious the eagles brass doesn't think anyone good out there exists? "If G-Lew or Reed can't do it, no one can!"
Eagles total yards yesterday:
Offense: 283
Punting: 283
Balanced. Attack.
You can hang 10 points on special teams. Unacceptable.
The offense only scoring 13 points is also a farce.
Dana Pennett O'Neil | Lewis is just one of several punt-return options
When he retires from football, Greg Lewis could make a living playing
Jimmy Dugan, the Tom Hanks character in "A League of their Own."
Parroting Hanks' instructions to his assembled female ballplayers, Lewis insisted yesterday that returning punts isn't all
that complicated.
"You catch the ball, you run with the ball," the wide receiver said.
So all that nonsense that
return specialists like to talk about, about staring down a bunch of guys barreling down the field to knock your head off?
"You catch the ball and go," Lewis reiterated. "Anybody who tells you they have a style, they're lying."
Whether Lewis' no-style style will be on display Sunday remains to be seen. Special-teams coordinator Rory Segrest said yesterday that the punt returner for the season opener hasn't been decided.
And just to make things interesting, Segrest tossed Brian Westbrook's name into the list
of possible candidates.
"We have some good options. It's just a matter of who we feel the best with at game time," said Segrest, who then ticked off the options as Lewis, recently reacquired J.R. Reed, Lito Sheppard and Westbrook.
Segrest said Westbrook is always available but whether his number would be called depended on game situations and just how busy Westbrook was with his other day job, namely being the offense.
"We could put him back there any time," Segrest said.
The odds are, Lewis will be the man whose name is called for the first punt. He has done the most work during the preseason, although that work
consisted of just two returns
for 20 yards.
After Lewis, the likely name next in the rotation would be Reed, who is making his third stop in Philly.
A specialist to Lewis' novice, Reed - who is expected to return kickoffs - is hardly offended that the job hasn't simply been handed to him.
"To me, it's exciting," Reed said. "If I get a chance to get back there, that means I've been given an opportunity. That's all
I'm thinking about."
Segrest didn't seem all that worried about the fact that he has a new punter, new holder and not a clear-cut punt returner just days before the season
begins. Perhaps he knows something we don't.
Or maybe like Lewis, he doesn't seem to think it's all
that complicated.

The Packers get a tying field goal due to a couple of freak improvisation plays, and you want to sort of hang this on the defense?
Trust me - there will be plenty of games the defense will lose for the team this year. Don't blame them now when they were actually excellent for 60 minutes on Sunday.
i would never blame them but before i say they played excellent i wanna see them shut down a quality team...lets see what they do against portis and betts this week...its gonna be a huge test for the run d

first of all the packers offense was crap. they were starting a rookie backfield and one of the starting WRs were out. so the defense had it easy. so its not like it was some huge challenge or accomplishment. packers also dropped a lot of passes and the eagles got away with some pass interference non calls. so i wouldnt say the defense was excellent.
2ndly on that drive the dlineman were really hanging on to Favre for a good 2-3 seconds before he found someone open. thats just beyond frustrating...lay him out just rigth away. how can favre just stand there and find a way to make the plays while lineman are trying to pull him down? favre is not mcnabb, culpepper, or the other bigger QBs who have freakish strength. the defense played alright against a horrible offense. i said they get a pass this week but really they did not impress me and for the rest of the season im still more worried about our D (esp now with lito out again) than i am about the offense.
This freakish strength of which you speak with McNabb is BS. His knee is at about 65%, and Favre is much stronger and more mobile right now.

umm im not talking about at this very moment.
im just saying favre is not like culpepper, mcnair, or mcnabb in terms of breaking out of sacks and nor is he vince young, garcia, or micheal vick in terms of just running away from defenders. when our lineman get to him they have to lay him out and not just play tag with him.

Are you serious? Favre's entire career is a non stop highlight reel of him running around in the backfield and making some of the most rediculous improv plays you'll ever see. And throwing interceptions. But still, he's always been considered a mobile qb. [/Madden lovefest]

I'll break it down Barney style for you.
non stop = continuous. as in, without pause.
highlight reel = individually great plays shown one after another.
him = favre
running around in the backfield = avoiding defensive players attempting to tackle him while remaining beind the line of scrimmage in an attempt to make a play downfield by throwing the football to another player on his team.
haha..nice nice
ive seen favre make plays. ive seen him throw across his body or run around in the pocket long enough till someone gets open. ive seen make really unorthodox throws...but ive never seen defenders hanging on him while hes still able to throw the ball away. he should have been on the ground on those 2-3 plays where we missed him. if it was just one play it would be ok but that whole drive it felt like our dlineman couldnt get him down. like he was a RB one on one with Considine.
the whole point originally was that this defense, when compared to the offense and especially the STs, gets a pass this week but its not like they played excellent themselves. they were even helped out by some of the rookies starting for GB, dropped balls, and some bad non calls. washington is going to be a much tougher challenge with lito out now and i wouldnt be surprised if the offense gets better while the D has a bad game this monday night.
