Title: Here we go with the Gas prices
Post by: phillymic2000 on August 31, 2005, 12:09:27 PM
I looked for the thread but after 11 pages i was too frustrated. I looked on www.gaspricewatch.com to see the cheapest gas in my area, it was $2.71 for regular 1 and 1/2 miles from my office, so I went down there and  :o $3.31 a gallon for regular, I looked across the street and saw Bp at $2.71. I waited in a long line and was pumping my gas when the owner/worker was standing outside, an older guy asked when they were going up. He says "One hour up 60 cents". I screamed out .60 cents!! he said "look at Speedway they went up" I can understand 10 - 15cents a gallon with our refineries down south in trouble, and I know that this is not a bigger deal then the actual disaster down south but .60 freakin cents is price gouging and it is dead wrong!

Yeah well...this is different.  So wouldn't a new thread be okay?  There is a specific reason for this rise in prices.

We were told at the police department on Monday night that this was going to happen and we were to be prepared for tons of gas drive-offs and fights at the pumps and/or inside with the cashier.  People will no doubt be pissed off and not wanting to pay.  It's gonna be fun.

Is it time to panic yet?  Gas is now $3.00 all around my house, and Drudge is reporting that Atlanta is currently at $5.50 and could hit $6 a gallon by the weekend.

The oil companies are ripping off the public in the name of national disaster, but we (the public) have no where to turn.  We need oil, and there's nothing short of riding a bike 20 miles to work or stop driving anywhere short of necessisty we can do about it.

I'm too lazy to do the math, but the average family income in the US is somewhere around $35,000 a year.  If you figure that the average person has to drive 10 miles to work each way, that's a gallon a day.  How much more can our economy take before it implodes?

Everyone on an interest only mortgage or reverse amortization loan need to be shaking in your boots.  As gas eats up all our money, and the economy crumbles, the housing bubble threat will now happen.  We are about to get farged, raw.

Someone please hold me.......

I was out this morning doing an appraisal and drove by a local gas station along State Road A1A (the beach road for those who don't know what A1A is) here in Daytona.  Anyway, a gallon of regular gas was $2.62 when I drove by.  I drove past the same gas station about an hour and a half later and the price was $2.89.

I got so fargin pissed off, I turned my car around and went into the convenience store to find out why the hell the price went up twenty seven cents in the space of an hour and a half.

Haji behind the counter said "dat eez de going rate right now... if you don't like it, don't pay it" to which I replied, "yeah, go farg yourself."

I hope his crappy little store burns to the ground with him in it.

Jagoff.

That's profiteering, plain and simple.

People simply aren't going to stand for that shtein.  If the Feds don't step in and freeze prices, there's going to be violence in the streets over this... just wait and see.

The odd thing is...the stations that are normally the cheapest are now the most expensive. The big name companies are all under 3.00. Saw a few at 2.79....but the smaller stations are over 3 bucks.

The thing is, there's simply no way gas prices should spike this quickly.   I can see it rising steadily as the effects of Katrina make their way into the system but immediately?

No fricken way.  The oil companies, distributors and service station owners are engaged in shameless profiteering at the expense of the American Public and the only way to combat it is for the Feds to immediately enact price freezes on petroleum products until the crisis passes.

It's like the circuit breaker that occurs in the stock market when runaway trading happens.   Bush has it in his power to freeze prices temporarily.  Why he hasn't done so yet is readily apparent.

The trouble with freezing prices, it upsets the natural supply and demand structure.  Assuming that supply and demand are in balance (equilibrium), which is causing this $3.00 a gallon price (and almost $5 in the Atlanta area), freezing the price will cause supply to drop.  Demand remains the same, but to reach the lower price supply will fall.  That's not good either.  Would you rather have enough fuel at higher prices, or a shortage of gas (and long lines, crime, and violence to go with it) at lower prices?

Of course, this whole argument is void because the fargers are gouging the American public.  I wish them all cruel and horrifying pain.

I filled up last night. It cost me $69.00.

I stopped at the gas station and it was $2.61.

When I came out of the store after paying it was already bumped up to 2.65.

I have no idea what it is at that station now, but I assume it is more.

I'm pretty glad I bought a Civic recently. Guys at work call me a Hoyda, which is fine, cause I'm a Hoyda with some dollars left over after I stop at the pump. BTW, the highest prices for today was Death Valley, CA @ $3.88 for regular.

I didn't say that.  If he could, he would.  But of course he didn't.

He's in his fifth year.  His party has controlled both the Executive and Legislative branches of the government, and it enjoys a very strong presence (if not a deadlock majority) on the Judiciary.  His policies have a great deal to do with many of our current situations.  The lack of ready National Guard.  The gas price gauging.  The deficit, which effects everything.

He is truly the worst president ever.  He was on vacation when this happened.  He's taken the most vacation of any president, ever.  With three more years to go, he'll build a Ripkenesque record for days spent off the job.  And where is he now that he's returned to his "hard work?"  What?  He's in D.C.?  But I thought he could work ANYWHERE???  Why isn't he in New Orleans?  Clearly his calendar is open; he was supposed to be on VACATION.  Why isn't he with the Mayor of New Orleans.  Or with the Governor of Louisiana?

Lemme guess, he's got to live his life, too?

He's a bastich.  He's hurting America.

The only ways to lower gas prices are to increase supply or lower demand. So either start digging or start killing people who belong to the emerging Chinese and Indian middle classes. The oil companies aren't exactly partying when they see people driven to public transportation, lining up to buy hybrids by high gas prices, cursing the oil companies all day long, and calling on their representatives to directly interfere in the market or dump subsidies into alternatives to oil. Profits are up due to demand and due to a major slowdown in new exploration (much of Big Oil revenues have historically been plowed into capital costs for new fields), but profit margins are down. I'm in a competing industry so I hope they go to hell anyway, but it's false to think the highly competitve oil industry is currently rife with collusion to jack up pump prices. The price of crude is determined by thousands of investors bidding for oil futures based on speculation, not by the Cigarette Smoking Man.

Capping the price of oil below world market price Nixon-style is a good idea if you like waiting an hour or more to fill your tank. If legislators really wanted to alleviate suffering at the pump without farging up the economy even more, they could always temporarily drop the gas tax. I think that's a pretty terrible idea for several reasons (the gas tax should probably be higher actually), but it wouldn't be any worse than capping prices.

I wasn't suggesting that the prices should be frozen indefinitely.  I meant they should be frozen when catastrophies such as Katrina occur to prevent shameless profiteering by ethically challenged businesspeople.

Of course, being ethically challenged themselves, BushCorp. wouldn't recognize a moral course of action if it jumped up and bit them in the scrotum.

Just like you said before we disagree, and thats fine. you want the President of the USA to be in New Orleans right now? Then you would be complaining that he is grandstanding, and security officers could be helping people instead of protecting him. The spike this week is being driven by the fact that the MAIN PIPELINE to the Eastern Seaboard (and as far as Chicago and Denver) was knocked offline due to pump failure down south.  The gas isn't flowing to the distribution points.

Opening up the reserves isn't going to help a whole lot since we only lost about 10% of the refineries, the reserves contain crude not gas, so gas production is not in as bad a shape as the distribution network.

Hopefully they expect a 10-30 percent restoration of pipline activity by the weekend.   Of course once the pipeline is fixed and price would  be expected to start falling back, the whole refinery/crude production thing will catch up with us and prices will remain high    :boom

Right now they are in the $2.75/gallon range but I'm certain they'll be up near $3.00/gallon by the end of the day.  Some of the smaller "mom and pop" gas stations around here are already out of gas.

I'm glad I filled up Monday night when gas was only $2.42 a gallon. Only $2.42... sheesh. And Saturn's get really great gas mileage (thank God) which is a huge money saver.

Well I'm kind of glad that I got that VW Diesel where I get 47 miles to the gallon. There are a few kits out there where I could run the car on veggy oil. If things get too bad I might start hitting up restaurants for used fryer oil.

Which is why I think we need to bring your car to KC for the roadtrip!!

I've got no problems with that. 6 disc CD changer should make the drive even better...

Sure thing man.  If there's anything else you need (smokes, booze, etc) get it on base.  It's a little cheaper and tax free.  :)

$3.72 this morning when I hit the gas station. That was the cheapest one I found in a two-town area. I really wish I would've stopped a couple of nights ago and filled up instead of going "ahhh... it's not like I need it right this second. I'll get it tomorrow"... two days in a row.

How sad that finding a gas price that started with a 2 would've given me joy.

Saw on CNN that Atlanta is looking at $6 a gallon. That's f'n ridiculous.

When I was in Belize, our guide said that gas prices are set by the government, and everybody has to sell at that price. What draws customers to particular places isn't the price of the gas, but rather the extra stuff like convenience and service. What a concept.

I'm almost never in favor of government intervention, but I'm willing to make an exception here.

This whole cost of gas increase makes me feel fortunate that Chicago has such great public transportation.  While I don't directly feel the effects as far as filling up my car, i'm guessing the prices of cabs will increase if they haven't already.

Quote from: Peoples Energys siteWhy are gas prices so high?
Many factors affect natural gas prices.

* Oil prices are at record levels. This is caused by growth in countries such as China and India that has created additional demand for oil and refinery problems that have increased gasoline prices. These increases pull crude oil and natural gas prices higher on the NYMEX.
* This summer has been hotter than normal throughout most of the U.S. This creates electric demand, some of which is satisfied by natural gas fired electric generation facilities. The gas storage surplus, which began strong earlier this summer, is now disappearing as natural gas gets diverted from storage to satisfy the electric generation demand.
* Production is struggling to keep pace with demand.
* Hurricane activity is predicted to be above normal, which creates concerns by analysts that wells in the Gulf of Mexico will need to go off-line, thus decreasing supplies and increasing prices.
* LNG shipments from overseas have not been as strong as expected – up only modestly from a year ago.

For those who use Pay at the Pump....I just heard this:

Pay at the pump authorizations, Beware! Texaco now holds $100 + purchase:

This was bound to happen with the rapid increase in gas prices. DW filled up at a Texaco station today. For $25 in gas, my AMEX credit line was reduced by $125, so they are now freezing $100 if you pay at the pump.

Thought I would mention this for those of you who have debit cards or low limit cards. You can avoid these ridiculous holds by paying inside.

I copied and pasted that from a MB that I was reading about the gas prices and stuff.

And I don't think they were saying they were close to their limit, just that they saw 125.00 held instead of the 25 when they saw their line.

Most of the gas stations down here have incorporated an automatic shutoff once you've pumped X amount of gas.  I guess it's an attempt to preserve gas so that the station(s) don't run out.  Luckily for me, I filled up yesterday before this started happening so I've got a full tank o gas.
